“It’s Vera.”

Both heads turned back towards me. “What?”

“My name is Vera,” I said. “Vera Edwards. I’m sorry for whatever I did last night or said. I remember most of it, I was just…”

“It’s all right. We all have one or two of those nights.”

“One or two?” Leeson eyed Jacob.

He rolled his eyes.

“You were very cuddly by the way when I got you out of the car to come upstairs,” mentioned Jacob.

“I was?”

“Very.”

My cheeks burned. Shifting, I realized that I hadn’t found my shoes. Maybe I left them back in his room. I was in such a hurry. Now, I was tired again even though I just woke up. Even with the coffee.

“Don’t worry though. You had the entire bed to yourself all night. I slept on the couch.”

“Oh. Thank you.”

“’Course, Vera,” said Jacob.

“And you’re all players on the VU hockey team,” I went on.

“I’m goalie,” Leeson said around a bite of toast that he popped out of the toaster. He ate it while still buttering the second piece.

“Right.” That made sense. I couldn’t imagine that there would be much room left in the net once he was standing in front of it. Continuing to drink my coffee. I made it to the bottom before I realized. “I should go.”

“You don’t have to.”

“You don’t even know me, and I stayed here too long already,” I said.

“But we’d like to, sweetness.”

My eyes widened at Jacob. I wanted to stay. I did.

And that all at once frightened me to stand back up again. “Yeah, I gotta go.”

“At least let me drive you back to wherever you live. On campus, right?” Jacob moved towards the table next to the door, sorting through the mismatched keys tangled together.

“You’re going to drive me back in that?”

“I mean, I was going to grab a jacket,” he said. His chest puffed out and I couldn’t help the fact that I was sure I was blushing as I looked at him. Again. Heat swirled in my gut.

I pressed a hand just there.

Reaching into the closet and pulled a sweatshirt over top of his head. It looked like sweats were the uniform for him and his… packmate.

I never thought I would ever say that in a normal thought.

I mean, I knew packs existed, but it was another thing to be in front of one. And so casually. My goal was to always stay away from alphas. It was easier that way and I wouldn’t get into trouble—my mother’s words that I found to be true most of the time. But now, I almost wanted to head back to the couch where Leeson sat, kicking his feet up on the coffee table which normally I’d question the sanitariness of but right now looked like the most comfortable place to be.

“Ready?”

I nodded. “Yeah.”
