“Well, I mean, obviously you did if you are now taking the walk of shame.”
I did not have shame. Or maybe I did. For some reason I did feel like I did something wrong even though I know I didn’t. In fact, for the first time, I felt sort of… excited? Happy.
No. Clearly, I was sleep deprived.
My cheeks turned pink anyway when I glanced at the mirror hanging on the back of my door.
“You did!” Shelby squealed. “You were with an alpha.”
“I wasn’twithan alpha.”
“You’re lying. I smell him all over you. Something with spice too. You have taste.”
“What would you know of alpha taste, Shelby?”
“I don’t know, but he doesn’t smell terrible so I assume he would taste good too.”
I made a face. “Gross.”
“Not like that—okay, a little like that,” my friend admitted, still way too pleased with herself for some reason. “Who was it.”
“It was no one. When you started dancing with your friends, I needed some air so I went outside.”
“Aw, I would’ve gone with you. I just figured you went home, and you had your phone to call if you needed a ride or something.”
“I know, I didn’t want to bother you,” I said, explaining though I wasn’t sure just how much I should. “Once I got out there Brian was there and giving me a hard time. Jacob showed up then and sort of told them all off.”
“No way. No freaking way did you just happen to run into one of the few, very hot alphas that go to school here,” Shelby nearly squealed. “Not only that, but you got a show of alpha strength. I’m not going to lie. I’m jealous.”
“Yeah, also thanks for checking in last night for me while I was carried away with said hot alpha,” I said.
“So, he was hot.”
I raised an eyebrow.
“I said I was sorry! I texted you. Called you even before I went home last night. Some guy, which I now know is Jacob said that you were ok. And took a photo of you. Then again, you could’ve been passed out dead so maybe I should’ve tried harder. I would’ve called again when I woke up this morning if you hadn’t beaten me here before I woke up.” said Shelby.
“It’s okay.”
“I know it is. Now. You were with a super-hot alpha! Jacob, Jacob…” she thought again. “Wait a second, what’s his last name?”
“Um.” I thought for a second. “Matthews, I think?”
“No.”
“What?”
“I still cannot believe this! You went home with Jacob Matthews? No one ever has gotten in with him and he’s so hot. And a complete flirt. At least so I hear. Is it true?”
I nodded. “I guess so.”
“People say that he’s part of a pack on campus. Is that true too?”
This time, much slower, I nodded again. He was. He was a part of a pack. He and Leeson and some other guy who I hadn’t met yet and was beginning to think that maybe… It would be better if I didn’t.
Probably definitely better.
“Maybe you could ask them to help you through your heat,” Shelby teased, wagging her eyebrows.
