Only it didn’t have the correct response. My stomach dropped.

“Hey, I didn’t mean it like that. Are you going to be sick and already did it with them?”

“I didn’tdo itwith anyone!”

“Really?” She cocked her head as if she still was not comprehending that nothing happened.

Nothing!

“Yes. Seriously. I fell asleep while Jacob was trying to get me home.” After he treated me to a delicious milkshake and the perfect salty fries to accompany it. I can’t believe I’d never been to that little diner before so close to campus.

Also, it was a good thing that I probably didn’t know the exact address of the diner now with my heat coming. I couldn’t imagine the kind of sugary sweet ice cream-based damage I’d do.

“Well, that’s disappointing,” she sighed.

“I need to stay away from them, Shel.”

“Why?”

“Because I can’t get tangled up in alphas,” I replied, simply.

“Again, I ask. Why?”

“Especially not alphas who think that they are a part of some pack.”

“Who says that they only think it? They started saying it two years ago during their second year.”

“They’re seniors?” This was getting even worse.

“They’re all on the hockey team together and everyone says they clicked on and off the ice. Like a weird pack fate. Not to mention, they are up to be picked up by some of the major leagues in the country. All of them. Together under some new sort of pack law that makes sure they are kept together. They’re basically married.”

I groaned, unsure what else to do or what I may or may not have gotten myself into already. Maybe I shouldn’t have told Shelby. Maybe I should’ve just kept what happened last night and this morning to myself… forever.

“They may be fully bonded.” Shelby thought about it for a second. “I’ll look into it.”

“Don’t. I mean, you don’t have to,” I said.

“Since when have you been someone who listens to the designation rules of what’s considered perfectly appropriate?”

I shook my head. This time. Definitely this time.

I couldn’t even imagine what my mother would say if she caught a hint of the fact that I spent a night near an alpha I suddenly couldn’t stop thinking about, let alone a whole pack of them. “They just made me feel…”

“Tingly? Because I don’t think you’re alone, girl.”

“No. I mean yes,” I admitted.

Shelby grinned, all teeth.

“I mean that they made me feel like…” I couldn’t find the right words and it was clear my friend was enjoying every moment of it. “The other day I ran into Leeson.”

“This story is getting even juicier. He was the one who ran you over on the thruway?”

“Yes. When I ran into him, I had the same kind of feeling. That tingly, thrilled feeling. I was just like some kind of omega mess you read about in those sexist textbooks during first-year designation support classes everyone had to take,” I said.

Shelby groaned at the memory of being forced through that general education requirement so that we could all understand what everyone was going through on a personal designation level as well as on an academic level. “Go on.”

“He smelled like one of the best things I ever smelled in my entire life. He peeled me off the ground and I didn’t want to breathe because I didn’t want to breathe anything else other than him. He was like the most amazing, rich apple pie. Then, I woke up this morning in some stranger’s bed, only it didn’t feel like a stranger’s bed. The sheets smelled so damn good.” I nearly wanted to moan as I remembered the spicy pumpkin scent. Jacob’s scent could be bottled and sold to coffee shops during the fall around the world. I wanted to drink him down even though I knew I shouldn’t. “And then…”
