Then there was the mystery door. The mystery third alpha I knew that Shelby would probably know who it was, but I didn’twant to ask. The buttery honey scent that now was going to haunt me.

Until I forgot about it.

I needed to forget about it. All of it.

“Uh, Vera?”

I blinked.

Shelby looked at me up and down. Her nose twitched. “You’re perfuming, I think.”

Shit.I forced myself to stop, flushing when I realized I didn’t have myself completely in check. If Shelby could scent my perfume starting, it meant that it had been going for a little while. Probably since I started talking about the alpha’s scents and how they made me feel… everything.

Something was wrong with me.

I dropped my head in my hands with a groan. Shelby gasped and I peeked one eye back open.

She remained where she was. Now, though, she had her hands covering her mouth. “Oh my god, Vera. You don’t think…”

“Think what?”

“You can’t be so blind. You’re anomega.”

“I’m very aware of that, Shelby,” I said, blandly. “But please, pretend I’m stupid. What are you trying to say? I can’t handle any more confusion today, all right?”

“You don’t think that these alphas right here on campus are your…” She drifted off, wary.

“My what?’

“Your scent matches.”

“My…” My mouth opened, yet nothing came out. Scent matches? Shelby thought that these random alphas I hadn’t seen before in my entire life were my soulmates?

Oh no. Oh no no. That couldn’t be true, yet my body still felt like I was engulfed in a small fire ever since I woke up thismorning. Not that it could be my heat. I still had plenty of time until that was scheduled to happen.

“Scent matches are like fairy tales though, aren’t they?” I asked. “They’re fiction.”

“Are they though? I’m pretty sure I hear of them occasionally,” said Shelby. “I think my second cousin twice removed somewhere down the line was a scent match and it was a big deal when it happened.”

“Wouldn’t I know, like, immediately?”

“Did they?”

I thought back to the shocked and delighted expression Leeson had when I walked out of Jacob’s room. And how Jacob had stopped me before I got out of the car. He looked at me like he wanted to say something but thought better of it.

I gasped and covered my mouth. Whenever I thought of them, I could feel this deep aching pain in my chest, as if there was already a bond there, wanting to drag me back across town to them and never leave. Just like I barely wanted to leave Jacob’s bed, or Leeson taking care of me…

Now Shelby and I had similar looks on our faces.

“Oh shit,” I swore.

“They are, aren’t they?” asked Shelby.

“How did you know before I did?”

“I’ve been trying to tell you that I’m smart,” she said. “I can’t believe this. This worked out perfectly, didn’t it? You can pack yourself up right now with some hot hockey players and you didn’t even have to put in any of the work. You lucky bitch.”

I shook my head. “I’m not going to do that.”
