“What?”

“Come on, Shleby. You can’t think that you can just ignore this.”

“I have to.”

“No, you don’t. Who in the world would ever want to ignore the fact that you randomly, literally ran into your mates this way? It never happens. Ever. And you are just going to let them, what? Graduate? Never see them again?”

A whimper started to brew in my chest at the implication of how yes, I was saying that. “You know I can’t even consider this.”

“Why not?”

“Because,” I said, thinking of my mom. “I was never meant to be someone’s omega.”

“Are you sure about that? Because I’m pretty sure fate is telling you otherwise,” said Shelby. “Is this about your mom? Because I’m sure… she’s strict. I know that from when I met her and she was very specific about her veggie flatbread that one time went out to eat last year but… she’ll come around. Your mom loves you.”

She did. She loved me. She loved…most ofme.

My heart broke again, unsure about this part of them though. The omega part. The part that had no idea if she could ever forgive me for simply being my designation whether or not I finish school. There was a reason that we lived alone, me and her, for some many years. In her eyes alpha males were bad. But falling prey to one was worse.

“I have to think this way,” I said. “I’m going to pretend that none of this happened.”

“But…” Shelby’s face fell. “Vera, scent matches are rare. You can’t just ignore it.”

“I can try.”

“Will your omega?”

She acted like the omega part of me was completely separate. Sometimes it felt like it was, a tiny monster inside of me growling to get out and nest and hug and run out of this stupid dorm room and track down my alphas.

No! No.

Not my alphas.

“She’s going to have to put up with it,” I said.

“But what about the Grim pack?” Shelby countered. “Do you think that they are just going to ignore this if they realize what exactly you are to them now?”

“Grim?”

“Yeah,” said Shelby. “Leeson Padderson, Jacob Matthews, and?—”

“Bah! I don’t want to know.” I put up a hand before she could continue. Only now I did know that whoever this mystery alpha was I hadn’t met yet was also the pack leader. An alpha with the last name Grim.

Foreboding.

Maybe it was a good thing. If the pack leader hadn’t met me yet, that meant that Leeson and Jacob couldn’t come back for me on their own. If they even wanted to. They had school sports and other responsibilities. I couldn’t imagine they wanted to add an omega to that mix let alone bond one.

And I didn’t want that either.

My stomach churned as if in opposition to the statement.

Plus, who was to say that even if I was some magical scent match for both Leeson and Jacob I would be for their other packmate? Those kinds of odds… they just didn’t exist.

“I don’t know, Vera,” said Shelby. “If it was me, this would be exciting.”

“Well, you’re not. You don’t get it,” I snapped before I could stop myself.

Shelby blinked in shock. “I’m sorry.”
