He swung his hair back out of his face as he took a deep breath.

I noticed it then, the way he nearly gasped in shock.

I also noticed just how much I wanted to whimper when I smelled his autumnal scent again. He was so freaking cozy. Like I could just lean in and curl up in his arms?—

I shook myself out of it and started to walk again.

He walked with me.

Don’t breathe. Don’t breathe.

I took another deep breath. Pumpkin and spice filled my lungs and my chest.

My entire soul.

Ugh, my omega was a pining poet at this point.

“Hey,” Jacob cocked his head to look at me.

“Hi.”

“I wondered if I would see you around campus today. I mean, I hoped,” said Jacob as we walked. “How are you doing? All recovered from the weekend?”

I didn’t answer. Honestly, I was still trying to hold my breath again though that wasn’t working very well.

“Did I say something?”

I shook my head, an ache in my chest. I didn’t want him to feel bad, but I needed to set boundaries. If I didn’t, I’d only be encouraging this. Whateverthiswas. “No. I’m sorry. I just… I can’t do this.”

“Do what, exactly?”

I stopped and stared at him.

“Ah.” He seemed to understand. Instead of forlorn, however, he grinned wider. “That. I have to say, I wondered if you suspected.”

My brows pinched together. “Suspected?”

“Mhm. I wondered if you knew immediately. I did. And it was… wild. I figured that alcohol might’ve dulled your senses but I’m glad to see that’s not the case. So, I guess this will be all the easier for me to ask you out on a date?”

“What?” This was not what I meant at all. “You want to go out on a date?”

“Yeah. Absolutely, I do. Leeson looked keen himself, but he wanted to give you time after you looked like you were about to bolt from our place the other morning. Plus, I called dibs,” said Jacob.

“You called dibs?”

“On the date. First date. Not you. Don’t worry, we like to share.”

I hadn’t thought Jacob would’ve been a rambler. Since the moment I met him, he was tall, dark, and completely put together. He was every girl’s wet dream, let alone omega. For some reason though, the way he kept talking, like he was nervous, only endeared me more.

I needed to cut this off.Now.

“I don’t think you’re understanding,” I rephrased. “I can’t go on a date with you.”

Confusion clouded his stormy blue eyes. “Why not?”

“Because.”

“Because why?”
