“Just because!” Being so close to him was making this so much harder. A million times. My lip started to quiver.

Jacob’s eyes widened at my reaction. His one hand went to clasp at his chest. “Don’t get upset. I’m sorry if I overwhelmed you.”

“It’s fine. I don’t know why I’m getting all stupidly emotional. I’m not an emotional person.”

Jacob cocked his head as if unsure if that was true.

I was not some omega that wasn’t completely in control of my emotions. Another reason this wasn’t good between us. That was probably what they’d want in the future if Jacob and his pack were a pack that stuck together and bonded. Eventually, they’d want a perfectly trained omega who actually… knew what she was doing.

I didn’t even know what I was supposed to major in like everyone else pretty much did from the day they started at VU. Or at least within the year.

“You can’t think that this is a good idea,” I attempted to reason.

“Why wouldn’t I? You admitted it, didn’t you? We’re scent-matched!”

Hearing him say it made my heart jump in my chest. I reached out as if I could stop him from saying what he already had. “Shh!”

He laughed. “It’s not a dirty word, Vera.”

It should’ve been.

“Just stop,” I nearly begged.

“I mean, I get it. It’s freaky. Out of the blue, crazy. No one finds their scent match so young if at all, but we did. So what if it happened this way? Or that Silas thinks that we’d be better off ignoring it for now? Not that he has even met you yet or seen what we see,” said Jacob.

“Silas,” I whispered the name.

Because there it was. Just like that, I had another complete name. Silas Grim.

Silas Grim was the owner of the brown sugar and honey scent that permeated my senses so deeply the other morning, I could practically have drooled with it through the door and myomega warmed inside of me as if it was anticipating a repeat performance.

I clenched my jaw as if I could still taste it on my tongue and stormed away from Jacob.

“Where are you going?” he asked.

“Listen to your pack leader,” I advised. “Seems like he’s got his head on straight.”

“See? He’d love you already for saying that even though you couldn’t be more wrong!” Jacob called, not running after me. That was something at least. “I’ll see you soon.”

“Nope.” Not even a maybe this time.

“We’ll see, sweetness.”

“No, I won’t.”

“We’ll see,” he repeated, still smiling.

VERA

“Vera?”

The moment I pushed through the doors of the residence hall the next day, free from any alphas jumping me on my way home from class, I paused at the desk where my RA sat on duty. She took her job the correct amount of seriously considering that she was basically guarding to make sure that no one was coming in and out without living here or a friend leading them in.

Her feet were kicked up and she had a book folded back on her lap.
