Vera shoved the beta an inch away from her. “Stop.”
“Why? He’s hot.” She muttered, but not low enough that I couldn’t hear. “I mean, I knew that he was but now I am seriously questioning your life choices.”
Her friend was on my side? I could work with that.
“I didn’t see you around campus today,” I said, looking at Vera. “Are you all right?”
“I’m fine.”
“She had a headache.”
My brow creased.
Vera glared at her friend, her cool brown eyes catching gold in the sunlight. “I’m fine,” she repeated.
“I was curious if you wanted to go out with me this afternoon,” I said.
“I said no.”
“I didn’t know if you changed your mind.”
She paused, biting the inside of her cheek. “I… I just…”
“What if we just didn’t call it a date?” I asked.
She looked more than skeptical.
“Of course, your friend can also come with us…” I looked towards the dark-haired beta.
She smiled at me, extending her hand. “Shelby.”
“Shelby can come with us,” I rephrased, giving Shelby’s hand a short shake. I must’ve been getting somewhere because Shelby looked thrilled by whatever was happening here.
Vera hesitated to look around. Her stomach growled. She was clearly hungry. “Okay. Fine. I’ll go on one date with you.”
“You will?”
“A small date. Tiny. This is it. Just so that you’ll stop asking,” she said.
“A tiny date?” I’d take it.
“That is what I’m agreeing to. One hour with Shelby. Tops.”
Perfect. I’d like to get to know her friends. “You won’t regret it.”
She put a hand on the side of my head. Did it still hurt her?
“Actually,” said Shelby. “I have to get going. I have a last-minute belly dancing club meeting I must get to.”
“Since when are your meetings in the middle of the day?”
“Since the theater has been crowded with the musical theater people,” Shelby lied smoothly. “I gotta go. Have fun on your date.”
“It’s not a…” Vera drifted off. She admitted it was after all.
I was going on a date. A little one, sure, but I’d take it.
I was going on a date with my omega.
