I remembered the night when we first met over milkshakes. I chose the risk over strict chocolate on his recommendation. Butterscotch. And it was amazing.

Carefully, she reached out for a knife and cut both in half.

“Or we could do that,” he said, appreciatively.

“I like options,” I said softly.

“Then options you’ll get. You also need to try the muffin,” Jacob said, insisting. He nudged it my way. “Life changing baked good, right here.”

“You’ve been here a lot before?”

“I wouldn’t say a lot. But enough times,” said Jacob. “The food is good. Plus, someone I used to live with for a while works here now.”

Lifting my sandwich with the strange honey cheese combination, my eyes widened. It was so good. Warm and crispy and gooey.

Jacob chuckled at my response. “Good, right?”

I nodded, covering my mouth as I attempted to chew and talk at the same time. “Lived with?”

“I didn’t always live near campus,” he tried to joke before clearing his throat. “I was moved around a lot. I was in the foster care system for most of my life.”

“I didn’t realize.”

“I don’t tell a lot of people. There's not really a reason now.” Jacob shrugged.

“What do you mean?” I couldn’t help but ask. “I mean, it seems like the experience is a part of you, especially if you still come back here to see your old… foster brother? Sister?”

“Brother.” He nodded. “Feels like a long time ago at this point. In the end, though it was rough, I was one of the luckyones. When I got to high school, I met Lee. His family sort of took me in and when word came out that they were going to move me again I sort of panicked. I planned to run even if it meant dropping out of school and sports… everything. One of Lee’s dads found me and brought me back to their home. I’d been there ever since. Until here. Obviously.”

“That’s…” I didn’t even know what to say. That was amazing.

I had no idea that Lee’s family was so close let alone so kind. I knew his mom was an omega and that she must’ve been part of a pack, but I had no idea…

“Hey, I didn’t mean to upset you.” Jacob reached out a hand as if to comfort me, but let it hover in the air. He didn’t touch me until I nodded.

For some reason, tears pricked the corner of my eyes.

He held my hand. “You alright?”

“I’m fine. Just emotional for some reason,” I excused. I tried to wave him and his concerns off, but he was holding my hand. I chuckled. He laughed louder before finally calming down. “Don’t worry about it.”

“I’m not now when you’re smiling like that.”

“I guess, I mean… I never met a pack—besides you guys. I heard of them but to hear about Leeson’s…”

A softer, slow smile spread across his face. “Just wait until you meet them.”

Because he still thought that I was going to meet them. Going out on this date surely only encouraged him—them. Maybe it was the extra hormones or being fed by Jacob yet again, but I wanted to meet them. I wanted to see the pack that was kind and took care of these two alphas who didn’t seem like the horrible, cruel men that my mother brought me up to believe were most alphas, especially when it came to omegas.

We continued to talk, or mostly Jacob did. He talked about growing up with Lee in his final years of high school and how he still tried to keep in contact with his foster brothers.

I felt like I knew almost everything about Jacob __ by the time the only thing left between us was a muffin.

He nudged the small plate towards me. “Go on.”

Hesitantly, I broke the muffin apart and took a piece.

I moaned. This muffin was out of this world. Why did this guy somehow always know where the good food was?
