“Glad you like them too. See? You deserved it after this messed up week.”

I lifted a shoulder. “My mom didn’t encourage it.”

“Your sweet tooth?” Jacob asked. “I always thought that was just a classic omega thing. Not saying that all omegas like sweets but…”

It was common. It was. “Is that also why you are always trying to feed me?”

“Kind of, I think. Plus, I love the look on your face when you taste something delicious.”

My face was now burning as I shrugged, trying to focus on picking another bite of muffin. I pulled off the crystalized edge and stuck it into my mouth. It was just as good the second time. “My mom tried not to indulge much of any of the normal designation stuff growing up.”

“I guess that’s nice.”

“Some of the time,” I agreed.

Some of the other times, I just wanted to eat junk food and not be told that I wasn’t going to be able to do that all my life if I wanted to be seen as a healthy, competent adult who could take care of myself without anyone else.

Like a pack.

My mother never liked packs. Ever. It was another reason I couldn’t believe that I was doing this right now or even pretending that this “date” was okay because it wasn’t?—

I nearly jumped as my palm slid over the back of my hand.

Jacob looked at me with soft eyes. “Change of subject?”

I nodded.

“Hey, Trevor!” Jacob waved the guy over who wore a flannel and apron over top.

The beta grinned as he made his way towards us. He ran a hand through his hair that flopped over the front of his forehead and the frames of his thick glasses. “Hey, Jake. I thought someone told me you came in. Good to see you.”

“Good to see you too.” Stepping to the side, he smiled at me. “This is Vera.”

Trevor’s eyes widened.

“Hey.” He extended a hand before pulling it back. Awkward. “Sorry. I don’t know the protocol here. It’s great to meet you. This is your girl?”

Jacob didn’t answer, but I was pretty sure that his smile said enough.

And I… didn’t correct him.

Trevor nodded. “It’s great to see you got what you dreamed of, man. You’ll be back around.”

“Yeah, you’ll have to come by the house again for game night.”

“Sounds great. You let me know when.”

“And bring the food.”

Trevor rolled his eyes. “You got it.”

The moment he walked away, I looked up at Jacob. “Shameless.”

“It was good food, wasn’t it?”

“Only if he brings muffins,” I said.

“Think you already got an invitation to game night, sweetness?”
