“Juice.”
I scoffed, looking down into the cup. “Really?”
“Not completely, but there is juice in it!” Shelby yelled over the music, having to cup her hand over the side of her mouth.
I cocked my head to the side and watched her take a long drink of whatever was in the cup. She didn’t fall over or foam at the mouth.
“Come on,” she encouraged. “Just a sip. Then we can call this a college experience for the books.”
I rolled my eyes but lifted the cup. Taking a sip, it did have a slight fruit punch taste.
“See? Not so bad.”
“Oh yeah,” I said. “Not bad at all.
Shelby grinned. We made it through the other in the tiny, slightly dilapidated house. The living room was the most crowded with people. I swallowed, trying not to breathe too deeply as another waft of liquor mixed with sweat hit my nose.
My eyes wanted to water from just how pungent it was.
“Yeah, you’re right Sawyer. Iwouldbe on top of Dr. Myers’ class. If I was, I’d be set to get that early pre-med scholarship. You know, if someone wasn’t constantly being a try hard and in all my classes since first year.” Dark eyes found mine next to mefrom one of the guys I noticed in most of my classes the past two years. He shot me a look of disgust from under his shaggy blond hair.
I couldn’t tell if Brian was joking or not even though there was a deep laugh to his words. Did he know that I was coming up behind him right then to say that?
Heat rushed to my cheeks. Trying to look anywhere else, I took another sip of the not-juice, juice drink. I wasn’t sure if it was a good thing that it was getting better the more I drank it.
“Puh-lease.” Shelby stepped to my rescue even as I reached out to yank on her arm in an attempt to stop her. We really didn’t need to get into it.
Especially not with Brian who though I never said rude things aloud like he clearly did, was a bit of try-hard that looked like he could use a good shower most days of the week.
“Shelby, can we just go?” I asked through my teeth.
She rolled her eyes at Brian, not shrugging me off, but certainly not understanding what my words suggested. “Like you could beat Vera out. She has like a ton of other things to worry about like when her brain is going to melt down due to a heat and everything else, and she’s still whipping your ass in your major classes.”
“Shelby,” I warned once again. She couldn’t just go around saying those things. Not only was it kind of inappropriate, but it was none of anyone else’s business. “Shelby, stop.”
Blinking a few times as if coming back to herself and realizing what she had done, she mouthed,sorry. She sat her mostly drunk drink to the side. She downed it a lot faster than I thought.
“It’s fine.”
“I’m sorry,” she said again. “It’s not.”
It was, though. It was hard for anyone to know exactly what was allowed to be said of or around an omega to make sure that they felt safe, especially since no one was ever around them like Iwas. I always had to get that. And I did… even if my stomach felt like it had been hollowed out as Brian and his few friends around him glanced at me with confusion and hunger in their eyes as they put two and two together.
“You’re coming up on a heat, omega?”
I guess once it happened, and I was out of class for a week it wouldn’t take long for the rumor mill to start anyway if people had nothing better to talk about anyway. It took long enough that everyone stopped talking about how campus security had to escort me out of my dorm that last time.
“It’s none of your business,” I still settled with when it was clear they were looking for an answer.
“I guess I know when I’ll swoop in to take that top spot again, so our professors stop looking at you like you’re the best thing that walked on this campus,” chuckled Brain. “Unless you want my help with your heat.”
My lip curled.
“She doesn’t want your gross dick, Brian. No one does.” Shelby stepped in front of me.
I didn’t want her protection, but I didn’t move her out of the way.
“I don’t know, I bet I could make it worth one of you girls' while.”
