“What?”

“What’s already happening. She’s coming between us. And then when she leaves, you’re going to expect me to put the pieces back together and it’s not going to happen,” said Silas.

“Who said anything about her leaving?” I extend my arms. “The only time she even considered it so far it looks like, nomatter how freaked out she is over all this, is when you literally barked at her to stay away. Which, Silas, is despicable.”

“I’m despicable…” Silas rolled his eyes as if I was stupid. I was not stupid.

Certainly not enough to not see that I hit a nerve, finally getting something through to him. Or at least I hoped I was.

“What, Silas? Explain yourself.”

“I’m the lead alpha. I don’t have to explain myself.”

“You won’t keep being the lead alpha if you don’t shut up and start listening to your pack,” I said before I could think otherwise, and Silas’s eyes widened at the claim.

At the challenge.

When we formed the pack, it seemed obvious that Silas would take the lead no matter the fact that growing up, I had been seen as the head alpha. No matter what team or friend group—certainly to Jacob when we decided early that we’d be a pack together. I was caring and kept a close watch on everyone. I wanted to keep them safe. But Silas, Silas kept us all exactly where we needed to be.

He kept us settled in a way no alpha I ever knew.

But right now?

Right now, that was not the alpha standing in front of me.

“You need to get your head on straight. Take a walk. Talk to me. Talk to someone.” I huffed. “But if you want this pack to be happy you knew that this was going to happen whether or not it’s a surprise so either get on board or…”

Silas swallowed. “Or what?”

I stared back at him, feet apart, in a stalemate. “I think you know what. And not because we want that.”

“Right. You just want your shiny new precious omega that is going to go into heat any day and probably ruin your chance of being scouted at the games coming up.”

“We’re set to go. We did what we needed to do and you did a great job helping to make sure that we all got there from keeping me from getting injured to making sure Jacob was set to pass his classes this whole time. You did that. And it’s amazing and we’re grateful for it. We are scouted. We get fucking muffin baskets, Silas. Muffin baskets. And they are coming every other day if you haven’t noticed the fact that coaches are getting irritated about it being in the locker rooms. Chill out. Be happy. This is the experience people dream of. She’s your scent match.”

“She’s nothing to me.”

“You won’t mean that,” I said. “Don’t ruin yourself from something amazing, Silas.”

He slowly shook his head, side to side, his eyes fading far away. “You do what you want. But I’m going to protect my pack.”

With that, Silas turned and headed towards his room. The door slammed, not loud, but loud enough to make a difference as I closed my eyes. My phone buzzed in my back pocket. Jacob was staying with Vera, and they made it there safe.

I guess that was all I could take for a win right now.

VERA

Jacob sorted through my drawers until he found a purple shirt that was close enough to the VU hockey team colors. However, then we did have to layer another sweater over top with how damp it was outside.

“There. Now you’re ready for your first VU hockey game.” He grinned at me.

“You’re going to be late.”

“Nah. I promised Lee I’d make sure you got there and got a good seat. Next time though I’ll have to make sure we have one of our jerseys washed so that you can wear it. Have to make sure everyone there knows that you’re our girl. You good to go?” he asked.
