My eyes landed on the two of them as I rushed towards Silas.

“What did you fucking do?” I screamed at my pack leader. My pack mate. One of my best friends. Right now, though, I wanted to beat him and rip his throat out if I could. “What did you do to her?”

Silas stammered, holding our omega in his arms as he stuttered over his words. “I-I- I don’t know what happened.”

“You fucking happened. You always fucking happen and now look at what you’ve done!” I snatched Vera away from him.

His eyes were filled with tears, but I didn’t care. Vera looked like all the light had been bleached from her skin. So pale and sick.

She whimpered.

Each tiny, upset sound was like a sucker punch to the chest.

“Is she okay?” Leeson reached out, swiping hair away from her face, she only whined louder, turning her head into my chest where I held her.

Both of us seemed to go through the checklist as we looked her over. She didn’t look harmed, and she wasn’t in heat. Her scent told us just about the opposite right now. Her sweet latte scent had turned harsh and acidic with distress.

“Is she okay?” Silas finally managed to speak.

“Don’t you dare come near her right now. For all of us,” I snarled at Silas coming to stand. “Stay away.”

Our pack leader’s mouth parted in shock, but he looked almost as panicked as the rest of us as he nodded. His eyes were bright and filled with something that actually looked like he cared. More than cared. “Just take her, but I’m going to follow.”

I didn’t hesitate. Rushing with Leeson to the car, I didn’t bother buckling us in. We were too far past that as I cocooned Vera in my lap.

Leeson jumped into the driver's seat, starting the car. “Do you know what happened?”

“I don’t know a damn thing,” I said. The dark tone caused another whine to escape our omega, though I couldn’t even tell if she was fully conscious or not. She didn’t seem to be. Then again, she didn’t seem completely passed out either as she cried.

Our omega was crying.

My heart felt like it was being broken and she was right here, safe in front of me. “All I know is that Silas did something to her and I’m not going to stop till I figure out what so I can fix this. I don’t know what we are going to do but if he keeps this up…”

I let the words hang in the air. Leeson must’ve known what I was thinking though as his face pinched.

If Silas kept this up, we couldn’t let him in the pack anymore. At least, not a pack leader. Pack bonds are serious business. When the three of us first decided that we were pack and nothingwas ever going to change that, there were more than a few people who tried to get us to reconsider.

After getting bonded, it was sort of like declaring to the universe that we were soulmates of a sort. Soulmates of our choosing. You couldn’t just walk away from them once that sort of vow was made. Bonds after all were unbreakable.

But that didn’t mean they were unshakable.

“I’m calling Mom.”

I nodded. “Now.”

“Calm down, she’ll know what to do.” Leeson pressed the phone to his ear, continuing to drive. The Paddersons picked up on the second ring.

Yeah, his mom or one of his dads would know what to do. They had to.

Because we didn’t. We had no idea what was going on here and we didn’t know how to fix it. None of us knew the first thing about taking care of an omega and all this time I figured it would come to us. But I was just no one who was allowed to have this omega in my life—to have Vera in my life. And we were already clearly screwing it up.

What happened back there?

Silas sure wasn’t telling us shit to fill in the blanks. And we… “We didn’t protect her.”

“It’s going to be okay, Jake.”

Was it?
