I clenched my eyes shut again, a shaky whine escaping me sending another round of, “It’s okay. You’re okay,” all around me, though I was finding it hard to believe.

“Just get some rest. We’ll be here when you’re ready.”

Rest. Sleep. That felt right. I didn’t want to do anything.

I just wanted it to all go away.

I let it.

Blinking my eyes open, I was in the dark and even that seemed too bright as I pushed myself to sit up. It felt like I was trying to pull off some great feat. And when I looked around, my eyes widened at the space.

I’d never been in this room before. The space was clean and well-organized in shades of black and gray. The scent could not betray it either.

I was in Silas’ room.

How did I get to be in Silas’ room?

Startled, I pushed back the blankets and swung my legs out the side. I winced at the feeling of the cold floor on my feet. Someone must’ve also changed me at some point into sweats, cloaking me in Jacob’s and Leeson’s scents that managed to calm me just enough even though I was still alone.

I pushed open the bedroom door and made my way into the hall.

“She isn’t okay. I can see that she’s not okay,” said Jacob. I never knew an alpha could whine, but it was close.

“Of course, she isn’t okay,” a light voice snapped. “You boys are absolute buffoons.”

“Ma.” Leeson sounded pained.

“Stressing out a poor omega who is being yanked this way and that by you lot. Omegas are sensitive to pack dynamics. My god, I’m pretty sure you’d all have a mental breakdown too if not just a hormonal one.”

“What?”

“Don’t give me that. You especially, Jacob Matthews. What are you boys doing? Did I teach you nothing? Courting isn’t some kind of competition. You’re supposed to treat her the way she deserves. You’re supposed to treat that very sweet girl like…”

“She’s everything.”

My heart stopped at Leeson’s words. So simple. My heart ached and heated.

“Exactly. You’re lucky that I had a feeling you were keeping something from me before this even started.”

“Yeah, Momma Padderson. Not like you haven’t been alluding to waiting for this moment since we met,” Jacob chuckled.

She shushed him. “She’s in your room?”

“Silas’s but…” Leeson caught me as I stood near the hallway. “Looks like she made her way out to us.”

Jacob twisted around with a smile. “Hey, sweetness.”

There was another omega across from me, a light floral scent hitting my nose. Yet she didn’t seem like a threat with her softfluffy blond hair and kind brown eyes looking me over as I stood on unsteady legs.

Leeson moved over me as if he could sense it as I noticed this. “This is my mom, baby. When everything happened, we called her. We wanted to make sure that you were okay.”

Everything felt so sensitive. My body was tender and my head was full.

“Hi,” I said. My voice sounded like nails against a chalkboard.

Leeson’s mom tsked. She opened up her arms, and though I didn’t know this woman, for some reason, I raced towards her. Tears started down my face all over again.

“It’s going to be okay, Vera. Right?”
