My mother reached out her hand. “Are you one of my daughter’s professors?”

Claudia’s eyes widened. She laughed, though not at all awkwardly. Claudia had way more confidence than I think I ever heard from someone first meeting my mother. “Oh no. I’m Claudia Padderson. It is nice to meet you…”

“Genna.”

“Genna.” Claudia smiled. “I guess we may be seeing each other more often in the future, huh?”

My mother tried not to appear confused as her one eyebrow arched. She quickly glanced towards me again as if I could explain with a look back.

But what would I say?

“If that is the case, I look forward to it,” my mother said smoothly.

Claudia turned back to me. Leaning in, she whispered in my ear. “I’ll see you inside or after, all right? I’m sure you could sneak down to the player dressing rooms or whatever they call it if you wanted to give Lee a hello if you wanted to. All the parents are allowed so it wouldn’t be a problem.”

“I’ll see,” I said. “Thanks, Claudia.”

The moment she was out of sight, my mother leaned her head down closer to my ear. “Who was that woman?”

“She is just a friend’s mom.”

“An omega?” She asked.

“Yes. She is,” I said.

“She wasn’t Shelby’s parents. Was she?” my mother asked.

“No,” I said. I certainly couldn’t make up that Shelby suddenly had an omega mother somewhere, waiting in the wings. “She’s the mom of one of my friends on the hockey team.”

“The friend you said you were coming to see play today.”

I nodded. One of. I couldn’t imagine Jacob’s father would be as keen to run up to me since he hadn’t met me yet. At least that was one thing or person I didn’t have to worry about as we entered the arena, looking around to make sure no one was coming after me from either side.

I almost wished they would so this would all be over. Leeson, Jacob…

Even Silas.

“Let’s go inside, shall we?”

I swallowed again, but it did nothing to help the dryness in the back of my throat.

VERA

“Does this last much longer?” My mother asked, looking around as everyone leaned forward with each move the team made.

So far, the last game I went to was much more exciting. And by exciting, I meant that I didn’t feel the need to sit completely straight and attempt to explain what was going on to my mother who asked how long exactly this was going to last before we could go and speak to my professor. The one I’d told her about.

I wanted to tell her that would never happen.

“There’s only nine minutes left,” I said, gesturing to the clock.

She nodded stiffly as they set up on the ice for the next play.

Leeson was tucked back into the net and Silas was off the side with Jacob, reading to make a move the moment the puck hit the ice. It was easier to keep my eyes down there to where the action was happening than to attempt a conversation with my mother again, even though I knew that eventually I was going to have to bring up the one conversation I dreaded.
