He didn’t need to sound so happy about it right now. He had some kind of dorky smile all over his face though, enough that the other guy who was sitting beside him rolled his eyes and turned his attention back to the game happening in front of us. I didn’t even realize that they started the next play.

“Are you sure you’re ok? You’re still bleeding.” I asked Leeson again, wanting to reach up. My hand was already part ofthe way there to touch his face and make sure he was okay even underneath the book.

“I’m fine, Vera. Promise. It’s just bleeding a lot because of where it’s at. Isn’t that right, coach?”

“It’s a rough team out there. They’re playing dirty, but you’ll be fine,” assured Coach. He twisted his hat to the side before putting it back on straight.

“The guy on the ice sure won’t be,” one of Leeson’s teammates muttered. Clenching his jaw and looking over at us. For a second, I did think that the Grim pack was the only alphas on the team, but I was far wrong by the imposing presence and distinct scent of coffee beans coming from the other guy. He must’ve been “No one messes with our goalie.”

Turning back towards the game, it looked like whoever the mystery alpha on the team was, wasn’t the only one who agreed.

The next play was called, and Jacob wasted no time. He skated around for the puck before rushing up in front of the player who injured Leeson, shoving him into the barrier. He snarled something at the player, but I couldn’t make it out. All I could see was his rage as he warned the player, sending him tripping over his own hockey stick and to the ground.

He got back up and skated right back towards the fastest skater I’d ever seen, and yet it still wasn’t enough as he bent his shoulder directly into the other player’s side.

My player’s side.

My hands covered my mouth, unable to do anything let alone gasp. If I thought my reaction to Leeson was bad. I was just glad I was already down here in the box because nothing would’ve stopped me from getting here.

Jacob hit the ground.

Chapter

Twenty-Seven

VERA

“Vera!” Someone yelled after me.

The medical team went onto the ice while Leeson held me back. I only let go and left towards the door leading towards the entrance to the arena when I saw Silas pulling Jacob up off the ice and heading towards the other doors to the locker rooms.

“Go and see him,” Leeson whispered. His voice was a tad hoarse from watching the way Jacob hit the ground, his helmet tumbling to the side. His head collided with hard ice.

Worry clogged my throat. Fear halted all other emotions until I heard my mother’s voice.

“Don’t you dare run after some alpha right now,” she scolded. Her hand wrapped around my arm, pulling me back.

I knew what to expect. I worked through all the options of how my mother could react and how she likely would and yet. I looked down at the hand holding me hostage when all I wanted to do was rush in the other direction.

A small whine escaped my chest and her eyes widened, letting go immediately even as I tried to stifle the sound. But it was out, right in front of us.

Between us.

“You… You just…” I turned away.

“Vera. Don’t you dare just walk away like I’m not even speaking to you.” Mom pulled my arm back, holding me hostage. When she let me lose, I had to step forward so that I didn’t fall over.

“Mom.” I looked back over my shoulder. I needed to go after them. I needed to make sure that Jacob was ok.

“Because now suddenly you are hiding things from me.”

“I’m not.”

“You aren’t?” she challenged, looking around me as if my lies of omission were piling up. Perhaps they were. I never had anything to lie to my mother about, ever.

Mainly because I never had anything so important to me that I needed to lie about.

“I’m not hiding anything,” I said again, though it was weak.
