I nodded.

“Good.” He cleared his throat. “Come on, Jake’s asking for you.”

Twenty-Eight

VERA

“Woah, woah— no females in the locker room,” said one of the assistant coaches.

Silas shoved him aside. “Pack business.”

“I thought you said you didn’t have an omega,” said one of the other guys who was down there.

Another shot went straight to my chest. I swallowed, trying to suffocate all the compilation of feelings going on. Right now, I had only one thing I needed to be worried about and he was on the other side of the room that smelled like sweat and disinfectant.

Silas glared hard at the man.

“Ya know what? Fine. Whatever. You lot and your pack business.” The assistant coach scoffed, but that didn’t stop us as Silas led me the rest of the way down the stairs toward the locker room and into the room aside from it. One of the medical staff waved a finger in front of Jacob’s face, mumbling something.

Jacob paid no attention to the doctor though. His eyes widened the moment Silas and I hit the threshold.

“Oh fuck. What happened, babe?” His gaze switched towards Silas. “Did you make her cry again? You asshole.”

I shook my head, unable to help a short bubble of laughter that came with the movement. “He didn’t make me cry. It’s not a big deal,” I said. “Are you okay? What did they say?”

Looking to anyone for answers, Leeson was the first one to speak up from where he rushed down the stairs. The game must’ve been over. He settled next to Jacob. He lost most of his hockey pads and was left in a tee and a layer of sweat. “Concussion. Right, doc?”

The doctor was jotting something down but nodded. “A minor one. You all know the protocol for this sort of thing.”

“Ah, shit,” said Jacob. “I don’t want to miss a game.”

“You’re out for the next game and until you can pass muster with me,” said the doctor. “Don’t worry too much. I assume one of you will stay up with him or check on him every two to three hours during the night.”

Silas nodded immediately. “It’s covered. We’ll take care of him.”

“We aren’t going to let you lose any more brain cells,” teased Leeson.

Jacob grinned. “Does that mean sweetness is coming home with us?”

My mouth parted, trying to come up with some excuse.

Silas beat me to it before I could. He reached out for Jacob, helping him to jump off the table they had him on. “Yeah, concussion-buddy. Let’s go see the parents and get you back to the apartment.”

“The best part was when I watched Vera rush down from the stands to come to your aid,” teased Jacob from where he sat. Iguess he couldn’t be that hurt if he was still joking enough to make me blush.

Claudia nudged me. “Don’t you dare. It makes me happy to see my son has a mate that cares so much about him. I would’ve done the same if these two hadn’t held me back.”

Her mates and Leeson’s fathers snorted. “He’s fine, Claudie.”

“I know.” Claudia turned her attention to me, dipping her voice lower. “Are you doing okay, sweetie?”

I met her eyes. I nodded, unsure if I could trust my words.

She wrapped her arms around me. “Don’t you worry. You’re part of our pack now, no matter what.”

“Thank you.”
