“Never thank me,” she scoffed. “It’s an honor no matter what anyone thinks. Okay?”

Swallowing, emotion swelled in the back of my throat.

She hugged me a little tighter.

Leeson and one of his dads helped Jacob get into the apartment even though he insisted he was fine. He probably was, but clearly was enjoying being cared about and getting to order double the amount of takeout he could possibly eat when Leeson’s parents insisted on getting us all dinner. They’d already planned to, but now they simply adjusted.

I smirked. “Are you enjoying your princess treatment, Jake?”

He barked a laugh, eyes glittering when he looked at me. “You should know how it feels by now, princess. Of course, I am.”

Everyone chuckled before dropping him down on the couch.

“You good?” Leeson asked.

Jacob nodded. “All good if my girl comes to sit with me too.”

Now it was my turn to roll my eyes, but I walked towards Jacob. Now that we had him settled and he was showered off to lounge on the couch, the heavy weight of what happened today started to settle over me. I carefully sat down, trying not to jostlehim. He wrapped his arms around me and yanked me until I was against him.

“There,” he murmured into my neck, breathing in right below my ear. “That’s better.”

After a few hours, Jacob was half asleep even though we nudged him to wake up every so often.

“You call us if you need anything,” said Leeson’s father.

“Thank you.”

“Keep those boys in line,” they teased, pointing as they made their way out of the apartment.

I shrugged, shaking my head, unused to being talked to so casually. They only seemed to find it funny, laughing as they led Claudia back to the car.

Now, it left all of us in the apartment.

I took a deep breath as I turned back to see Jacob passed back out on the couch yet again. I shook my head at the sight. Leeson walked over to the couch and dropped down next to his packmate. He reached for the remote and turned on the television, keeping the volume low. “I got sleep-watch on him.”

I paused and nodded once. He was tired. But safe. Both of them were.

A presence returned behind me. “Can I talk with you, Vera? Alone?”

Silas waited, head tilted down to my level.

With a deep breath, I looked up and met his eyes. “Okay.”

He motioned for us both to head down the hall likely to his room. As I walked, I glanced over to Leeson who gave a small thumbs up. I wasn’t sure which of us it was for, but it did make me feel better.

Walking into his room, I took a deep breath in, his scent automatically relaxing me though, this was the first time I was in Silas’ room with him. The only other time was likely right after he tried to reject me.

And we both failed at letting me leave then. Once and for all perhaps.

“I’m sorry that I treated you that way,” Silas said as he turned, leaning against the shut door. “I know I explained before, but I want to again. Especially over the past few weeks now that we’ve been…”

“Together.”

He smirked. “Yeah. When I got to college, I figured everything out. I knew that I wanted to play hockey and turn out like a good alpha. A decent man, unlike my father who was basically a walking alpha stereotype. I never wanted that, so I made sure that I took the steps to make sure I held everything together, even if that meant being alone. Then, of course, I met Lee and Jake, and everything changed.

“It worked out, sure, but it isn’t like forming a pack in college is something someone recommends, especially not when we are already working on our careers that could break us apart or could’ve before we legally declared our pack which is a whole other mess. Anyway, I thought we had it sorted out and it would just be us. It would be my family and I realized I started to like it. Nothing could mess it up.”

Then came me.
