I took the short walk from the police station to the Mayor’s office and greeted his secretary before walking inside to see him.

Approaching Alexei at his desk, the glow of the computer screen reflecting on his face, he looked up as I met his gaze. I closed the door after me, and I walked towards him. Weariness showed on his features, reflecting recent events' toll on him.

"Hey," I greeted softly. "How are you?"

“Not great, I am overwhelmed,” he sighed, and I went to his side.

“We might not be friends, but–” I started, but he cut me off.

“We are friends, Evelyn. you have been a great help to me,” he replied, and I felt warm inside. Something about how he said it made my stomach flutter. I hugged him, unable to say another word.

“Thank you for everything,” he murmured while hugging me, and I felt immense relief. At least he knew I would be there for him no matter what.

“Now, tell me the latest update about your case,” he said, and I told him about the tip line and how we found the costume.

“You were wrong about the lycan theory, and I was right about it being a costume,” I added, and he laughed.

“I’m so glad I was right to accept the FBI’s offer to help us investigate the murders. You are the best,” he clapped, and I laughed even more.

"I felt like I was being followed today," I blurted out, meeting his eyes.

Concern furrowed his brow. "Again?"

"Yeah, but it's weird. Not the usual feeling of danger. More like someone's watching, you know?" I explained carefully.

Alexei's eyes narrowed, protective. "You need to be careful, Evelyn. Don't go anywhere alone."

"That's why I waited for you to finish up here," I reassured him. "We can head home together."

He sighed, gratitude and worry in his eyes. "I appreciate it. We're dealing with something beyond our understanding, and I don't want you getting caught up in it. I would hate myself if anything happened to you."

His sincerity touched me, and I nodded. "We're in this together, Alexei. I can't let you face it alone."

That moment made me feel even better. Somehow I felt like he would always be by my side.

CHAPTER 19 | JUST FRIENDS

ALEXIE’S POV

The aroma of simmering spices filled the air as I moved around the kitchen, trying to create music with food. Evelyn sat at the counter, her eyes following my every move. She was still cradling the glass of scotch she poured herself in her hands.

I boasted about having the best recipes, and now we were testing that theory. Something about her sitting here while I cooked for her made my stomach flutter, and I was enjoying it.

"You know," she began, a playful smile on her lips, "if your cooking skills are half as good as you boasted, we're in for a treat."

I chuckled, flipping a vegetable with a flourish. "I don’t make empty promises, love. I am a natural at this. Cooking? That's an art of passion."

Evelyn leaned back, observing. "Passion, huh? What's the secret ingredient?"

I glanced at her, mischief in my eyes. "Why don’t you wait and see?"

She laughed, the sound filling the room. "Well, you've got me intrigued."

I continued chopping, our banter a delightful distraction. "Talking about mysteries, Evelyn, any mysteries on your mind?"

She pretended to ponder, tapping her chin. "Just wondering why someone as skilled as you is still single. Half of the ladies in Harmony Grove would die to get in bed with you.”

Her boldness took me aback, and I laughed. Who had time to get involved with women when you had to manage a town filled with Vampires, Witches, and even humans? It's already draining. The curvature of her lips caught my eye, and I realized how beautiful I really thought she was.
