A new officer was on duty at the reception desk today and we exchanged pleasantries before I made my way to the Sheriff’s office. His door was locked, so I went back to reception to ask about him. I was told he had yet to come in today, so I walked away to focus on other parts of the investigation.

I waited for the Sheriff to get news about Janet, but the whole day was strangely quiet. No one called, and when I tried calling the Sheriff, he didn't answer. Something felt off, and I had more questions than answers. Maybe he was busy comforting his daughter, but we had jobs to do and the earlier we got started, the better.

I tried calling Alexei, hoping to share my worries, but he didn't pick up either. I wondered why he wasn’t picking up my calls. It was very unlike him to leave my calls unanswered or not send me a quick text at least.

Getting more worried, I decided to leave the station. The walk home, usually nice, felt strange. The air felt tense, and the city's sounds felt distant. The sun went down, making long shadows as I walked faster.

The streets felt like something dark was hanging over them. I thought about the day, the missing people, the weird call from the Sheriff, and Alexei not answering – it all added up to a confusing situation.

When I got to my door, I hesitated. Home, well Alexei’s home, usually cozy, now felt like a mystery. I went in, and the quiet inside matched the quiet at the station.

The day turned out quite different from what I expected. I couldn’t shake the feeling that Sheriff Callum was hiding something. Whatever it was, I would find it and reveal it. Another mystery was the only explanation for what went down yesterday.

I was too disoriented to go to the police station the next morning, and somehow, I knew the Sheriff wouldn’t be present. I decided that I would wait a bit more before I dug into the events of Janet’s rescue.

I had turned my phone off as usual, and Alexei was still not back from wherever he went. I wondered where he had gone. The case was driving everyone crazy, especially with his missing sister, so I would understand if he needed to clear his head after the Janet thing.

After moving around and still feeling worse than I was supposed to, I decided to take a walk. I hoped it would help me clear my head and see things better.

I lost track of time walking around Harmony Grove, inconsistencies stuck in my head. By the time I realised it was time to go back, it was already getting dark. I still did not feel safe walking back to Alexei’s place in the dark, especially with the way things were going.

There was a nagging feeling at the back of my mind, which I had to ignore as I made my way to his place. I wasn’t a coward, and I didn’t get to my position in the agency by shying away from the dangers of being an agent.

As I turned a corner, the air got colder, and I felt something bad might happen. I reached into my waistband to feel my firearm. As my hands pressed against the cold metal, I felt reassured. Whoever was following me better know I was prepared.

Suddenly, everything went crazy. Someone came out of the dark, fast and strong. Before I could understand what was happening, a hand covered my mouth, stopping me from screaming. I panicked and tried to getaway, but the person was too strong, and my heart was racing.

In the dim light from the streetlamp, I saw a shiny thing in the person's hand. It was a syringe, and it hit me – this was how the serial killer had attacked the others we were investigating. Now, this killer was right in front of me, wearing a mask.

Fear took over as I fought to get free. The person's mask hid their face so I couldn't tell who they were. The syringe they held felt like a deadly threat, and I knew I had to escape.

They tried to poke the syringe into my neck, and I panicked even more. I could feel the cold metal on my skin, getting closer. I tried to scream, hoping someone would hear me, but my mouth was still covered.

In the middle of the struggle, something pushed the attacker away from me. It was sudden and strong, and I stumbled back, trying to catch my breath. Before I could understand what happened, I realized a mysterious figure in a hood had appeared and faced the masked person.

A fast and tough fight happened right in front of me. The hooded person moved like they had superpowers. In the shadows, I saw the face of the killer – it shocked me. It was someone I knew from the police station, someone I trusted.

The shock hit me hard. The person who attacked me, now unmasked, was a fellow police officer. Fear mixed with the confusion I already felt. How could someone I worked with, someone who was supposed to follow the law, be the one doing these terrible things?

I was still struggling to piece everything together when a sharp pain coursed through me. It was unlike anything I’d ever felt before. My legs turned to jelly and I hit the concrete sidewalk. Everything went pitch dark after that.

CHAPTER 25 | UNFINISHED RITUALS

EVELYN’S POV

Iwoke up in a weird room. I wasn’t anywhere I recognized. It looked like a magical place with symbols and candles. I felt worried and confused. My clothes were different, a white dress that sparkled a bit. I didn't know how I got here, or where "here" was.

I sat up and the events of last night started to flood my mind. I was attacked on my way back to Alexei’s. The killer tried to inject me like the other victims, but someone saved me before I passed out. I looked around again, starting to wonder if the person who saved me had brought me here.

I gotout of bed, my feet felt cold on the floor. I walked down a hallway guided by a faint light. The hall had doors leading to other rooms. This place was huge, and it left me even more concerned about where I was and where the person who saved me could be.

I was lost, looking around and needed someone to answer my questions. The first woman I encountered looked like she had somewhere urgent to be, and my attempts to gain her attention were futile.

For a moment, I almost thought I was invisible and maybe no one could see me. My throat was parched though, so that made me feel a little more sure that I was still alive and not a ghost.

I made another turn, finding myself in a very busy corridor. Multiple women were walking into another room, though none of them paid me any attention.

They were all wearing the same white dresses with a moon necklace – just like the one my mom gave me. My hands reached for the necklace which was nestling perfectly around my neck. I struggled to remember if I was wearing it when I was attacked or if they found another one for me.
