Her pronouncement struck me like a physical blow. This wasn't just about Evelyn; it was a power play to reshape the town in their sinister image. The poison intensified its grip, but I fought against the darkness, unwilling to let them take pleasure in their victory.

"Why?" I croaked, struggling to understand the depths of my sister's betrayal.

"Power, Alexei," she hissed. "The taste of it is intoxicating. I want control over every vampire in Harmony Grove, and you've always stood in my way. The council sees the potential in me."

I shook my head, disbelief mingling with pain. "You won't win. Harmony Grove won’t give in to your tyranny."

A cruel smile twisted her lips. "You always underestimated me, Alexei. Now, you'll witness the fall of everything you held dear."

As she spoke, footsteps echoed in the room, and a figure emerged from the shadows. It was a police officer, but I struggled to remember his name. He had been a part of the task force team the Sheriff set up with Evelyn. I couldn't be more shocked.

"Take care of Evelyn," my sister ordered, her eyes glinting with satisfaction.

My heart hammered against the poison's grip, but I wasn’t willing to give up yet.

"You won'tsucceed. Evelyn is stronger than you think."

My sister's laughter echoed through the room as the killer left, sealing Evelyn's fate. The Sheriff observed silently, his gaze devoid of any hint of remorse. The vampire council remained enigmatic figures, shrouded in darkness.

As I fought against the poison's debilitating effects, I wondered how I had failed to see the darkness within my sister. Betrayal cut deeper than any physical wound. The room blurred, and my consciousness teetered on the edge of oblivion.

"You always believed in the goodness of people," my sister mocked. "That's your greatest weakness, Alexei."

In the haze of pain and impending darkness, I held onto one unwavering thought—I would not let Harmony Grove fall to the shadows.

CHAPTER 27 | MISSION COMPLETED

EVELYN’S POV

It had been two days since I entered the police station which hummed with activity.. Sheriff Callum greeted me warmly, and the officers seemed genuinely pleased to have me back. I wonder if they knew I was attacked two nights ago and if they already found the body of the attacker, whom the moon witch had perhaps killed while saving me. I decided to keep that information to myself and pretend everything was normal, though it felt far from a typical day for me.

Everyone was moving around as if we didn’t have a killer on the run and everything that used to be on the evidence board had been erased to fit whatever narrative they were playing with now.

Something about the way the Sheriff had been handling things recently was off. First, he refused any help to save his daughter and disappeared for two days in a row, only to appear and pretend like all was well in the world again.

I checked my phone again to see if Alexei had left me any messages. Alexei wasn’t the type to ghost anyone I hoped nothing had happened to him. He had lived for centuries and I felt he would be able to protect himself, but I couldn’t shake my concern.

“Special Agent Evelyn, we're glad to have you back. The Harmony Grove Police Department owes you a debt of gratitude for your dedication and hard work.” Sheriff Callum announced the moment I walked into the board room, and my eyes darted around. Every shred of evidence I hung on the board was missing. It was like the whole place had been cleaned up.

“Thank you, Sheriff. It's good to be back. Any updates on the case?” I asked with a smile, and he smiled back at me. His smile was too cheery and it made my skin crawl. I wondered what they knew that I didn’t.

“Yes, indeed. We've uncovered the identity of the killer. Shockingly, it was one of our own – a fellow police officer.” Sheriff Callum replied, and I knew they found the body of the man that the witch killed. It made me wonder if they knew I was also at the scene two nights ago.

“What? Who?” I asked, feigning shock.

“It was Officer Daniels. Hard to believe, right? But the evidence is irrefutable. He attacked someone and they overpowered him. He was caught red-handed and the officers on duty managed to get a confession out of him before he passed,” another officer added, and I knew they were lying right to my face.

“Daniels? I worked with him. How could he…? Did they find his victim?” I asked. I needed confirmation if they did their work or not. I had passed out and I knew the moon witch that saved me took meto the coven instead. If she had involved the police, she would have mentioned it to me.

“People are complicated, Evelyn. We never know what someone might be hiding. But the important thing is that justice will be served.” Sheriff Callum added, and I knew it was their way of saying the job was over and it was time for me to go. Whatever it was that they were covering up, the police were involved in it too.

“Your instincts and dedication were instrumental in solving the case, Agent Evelyn. You did an outstanding job.” Sheriff Callum added.

I nodded with a fake smile, my heart beating rapidly. This place could go from being a safe space to being a place that would harm me in seconds.

The sheriff handed me a letter of endorsement, praising my efforts during the investigation. It was a recognition I hadn't expected. As we concluded the meeting, the Sheriff expressed his gratitude once more.

“We'll make sure this letter finds its way to higher-ups. You deserve it.”
