“No. I was tired. My wife is with her family, so I find it hard to sleep at night without her body beside me,” I say.

It’s as if I’ve awoken a storm, as he tries to lunge for me. I didn’t realize he could be sparked so easily.

“Fuck you! I was supposed to marry Belén. And you went and married her, or was it her sister? Whatever happened on the day, it was messed up. Just like you!” he snaps.

“Calm down, boys. Jorge, he’s not worth it,” Papá says as he takes Jorge to the side and then moves to the same side of the table as him.

“At least I didn’t just dump everything and lose my memory for years. Who the fuck does that?”

“I was in an accident, you idiot. I had amnesia.”

“Because you fucked up and our business would have been worth a cent. So you ran off, you fucking coward!”

He’s going to hit me, but then I want him to try. I’ll fuck him up in a heartbeat, especially because I have a black belt and I can not only defend but attack whenever I’m ready. I shift to the same side of the table as them.

“Boys, calm down!” George shouts, and then he comes in between both Jorge and I.

“I can’t believe that you’ve been reunited after years and all you do is fight.”

“Really, George. You expect the two of them to get on?” Ryan, the company lawyer, says as he walks in.

“You’ve done nothing but create animosity and hatred between the boys for years. You should be thankful to Diego for rescuing the company after Jorge left. He’s managed to bring the figures up. Back into the black. Anyway, let’s get settled and get this meeting over with. I have some HR matters to attend to.”

Ryan’s eyes meet mine, and I know the HR director told me the case with Belén is problematic but I can’t deal with that right now. Especially with the shit between George and Jorge.

“What did he mean about the company being in the red when you left?” George asks Jorge in Spanish. Just so that the lawyers don’t get wind of it. It brings a smile to my face, knowing that as much as George thinks that he knows it all, he doesn’t know his precious son is a shit businessman.

Jorge ignores him as he gives me a look, and I can feel his eyes boring into me, but I ignore him as I sit on the side of the table with Ryan and his assistant. And George and Jorge sit on the opposite side.

“What do you want, George and Jorge? Do you really want and expect Diego to just give up the position he’s been holding on to successfully for the last six years? Six years is a long time.”

“Well, actually they want him to step down as CEO, and for the shares which were Jorge’s and given to Diego whilst he was …”

Yes, his lawyer finds it hard to describe exactly what we should be calling Jorge’s little holiday.

“When Jorge ran away? When he fucked off? Or rather, when he fucked up?” I fill in the missing pieces.

Ryan narrows his eyes at me, as if to say that I’m acting like a kid. I feel like one whenever I’m with them. This is all it’s about, us keeping score and trying to beat each other.

“I’m not going to give up being the CEO because he decided to come back,” I grunt, but then Ryan shakes his head.

“Well, in that case, you’ve wasted my time,” George says as he gets up.

“Papá, we haven’t discussed the terms and our proposal,” Jorge urges for his father to sit down.

“There’s no point. We need to fight, that’s the only way to get what you want. I told you that we’re fighters.” George cuts his eyes at me, and then storms to the door.

Ethan looks bewildered as if he doesn’t know what to do, but then hurries up and follows them with his case and iPad in hand.

“Thank you for your time, gentleman,” he says out of breath as he rushes to reach them as they get to the elevator.

“I see your father hasn’t changed, nor has Jorge. Where do you think he was really all this time?”

I shrug, as I do what George accused me of doing earlier—I head to my bar and pour myself a drink.

“Do you want one?”

He nods. “You know they are not going to just back down, they’re going to fight and come out with all swords blazing.”
