Leticia

It’s as if I want to push Diego as far out of my mind as possible, the man drives me insane and I need to think of someone other than Diego. I know he doesn’t think about me in that way, otherwise he would be here supporting me. Not sending me some crazy messages.

“You know what today is?” Mamá asks as she rushes into the kitchen.

“Seventeenth of September,” I reply as I look at my phone. I throw it down on the table, annoyed that Diego is not sending another apology message. He needs to come here and beg on his hands and knees.

“Santo!” I jump up from my stool as I realize what Mamá’s talking about.

“Si, it’s your abuela’sSanto1.”

Abuela is called Ardiana and we always celebrate each other’s saint. It’s more important than our birthdays because we give each other gifts, it’s a blessing to be named after a saint and we traditionally celebrate it. In all the madness we must have forgotten about it. But not about her.

“Okay. So we’ll keep it cool,” Mamá says.

“And then …”

“Well, I’ve told everyone about it, and they’ll be at the bar around two. And I’ll put the decorations up, Papá is out getting the gifts, and all you have to do is get her there for two-thirty.”

“I thought you said everyone will be there at two.”

She raises an eyebrow. Silly me. I’m back in Spain, not New York, where they value time unlike here. Here we’ll be lucky if most turn up at that time, so it’s best to keep it a bit later.

“Right. But then how do I get her to dress up and everything?”

“Leticia. Think. I can’t do everything right now.”

I nod my head, thinking about ways to get Abuela to dress up and get her all made up to go out. I’m not even so worried about that, what bugs me more is if she has an episode. Maybe having a party for her Santo isn’t a good idea, especially with her health issues. Then again if she does remember then she’ll hate us for not remembering her Santo.

I can tackle any mission, including getting her ready. I head to my room and shove my phone in my closet. I have like three hours to get the plan into action, and if I have my phone, I’ll just be looking at it every five minutes and thinking about Diego. I don’t want to do that, I only want to think about her and no one else. It’s her day, after all.

“Leticia, I’m so disappointed. And you’re my favorite grandchild.”

She says that to all her grandkids, I think as I leave my room to see Abuela standing by my door.

“It’s mi Santo, and you didn’t remember me?”

My eyes light up at the idea of the old Abuela. The one who loves to guilt-trip me, saying this to me. She hasn’t been around the last couple of days, but she’s back again.

Even if she is scolding me.

“I didn’t forget. We’re doing a surprise party for you.”

Not anymore!

Joder!

How did I fall into that trap?

“Really?” She claps her hands.

“Really!” I confirm.

Disappointed that she didn’t even have to worm it out of me, it just jumped straight out of my mouth.

She kisses me on the cheek. “What time do I need to get ready for my surprise?”
