I’m so happy to see Diego, I thought from the moment he heard about Abuela he would rush to be by my side, but the moment he came into the church, he left again.

I find myself running after him just before mi abuela’s funeral starts. The priest shifts his head from left to right, unclear what to do.

Yet, I find myself continuing to chase after Diego. He can’t leave, he only just got here.

“Diego, where are you going?”

“Mi padre. Esta dentro.”1

I’m confused, so what if his father is inside? It’s expected. Our abuelas were best friends, they practically raised their kids together.

“Him being here shouldn’t be a surprise. I mean, mi abuela was best friends with yours. Our families grew up together.”

“I just wish someone had told me, so I could be prepared.”

He turns his back to me, so I walk in front of him.

“Mi abuela is being buried today. I’m heartbroken, and you didn’t bother to see me as soon as you landed.”

“Mi abuela said that you had family and she wanted me there with her. Besides, I sent you messages and you never replied.”

“Because I lost my phone, I told you,” I snap, and I can feel myself getting heated. I’m losing control as I’m at a funeral. Not just any funeral, and this man. The one I’m supposedly in love with can’t help talking about himself.

“I don’t care what the beef is con tu padre. Be here for me, please,” I beg as I take his hand, and then he nods.

“It’s so fucking hard. He blames me for everything. For killing Mamá.”

¿Qué?

How could he have killed his mom? Why is he telling me this now?

“Leticia, the service is starting you really need to get inside. Are you all right?” Alberto asks, and just like that an emotional Diego turns into a beast. The one I’ve seen when I was in the club, just before I passed out.

“She’s with her fucking husband, of course she’s fine.”

“The last time I checked, you were divorced!” Alberto shouts, and I want to tell him to stop, but I’m too late.

Diego marches up to Alberto, who doesn’t know what’s going to happen. Maybe he thinks that Diego will just push him or warn him away from me, but I know Diego. I know he’s capable of doing a lot more than that. I could smell the smoke on him as I try to race ahead of him.

“Keep your fucking filthy hands off my wife!” he barks before I hear the crack of his fist against Alberto’s face. It’s as if he doesn’t stop there as he jumps on Alberto like a wild animal, and everyone can see what’s going on.

“¡Basta2!” his father barks as he runs down the middle of the hall. I’m slumped on the floor, I can’t stop crying. So many amazing people are here to say goodbye and to celebrate the life of a wonderful woman and he can’t see that.

He’s so consumed in his own emotions that he’s just gone out of his way to ruin the one day I wanted to be special for her.

Diego ignores his father, along with anyone else that tries to stop him from damaging, possibly killing Alberto.

I can’t watch as I close my eyes, just like I did in the bathroom that night, and hope what is going on just goes away. Just like I want Diego to go away right now.

“Leticia,” I hear my name being called over and over again.
