Clearly one of our guests, and seeing as nearly all of the two hundred people were nearly family, mainly from her side, she’s calling one of her family members a thief.

I wouldn’t be surprised. A couple of them, mainly the women, have been in jail.

Then she starts to stroke me as if I’m a dog, Belén told me they had a dog, Pablito, as a kid and that Leticia misses him every day. She puts her feet up on the seat, then sighs.

“¿Pablito, por qué no te quedas? ¿Por qué Diego, Abuela y tú me dejáis? ¿Qué pasa?3”

The woman who often irritates the fuck out of me is all of a sudden vulnerable like a child. I don’t hate her or even want to tell her that she’s making a fool out of herself as she sobs in my arms. I become the comfort she needs as the driver pulls up outside the hotel.

I take her in my arms and carry her into our suite. It has been a long day for both of us.

“What the hell is that noise?”

My arms are vibrating as I enter the elevator, then as the doors shut, it just echoes through the walls. My arms are wet from her drool, and the noise is deafening. As much as my bride may look like a princess, she snores like a pig and drools like one too.

2 What?

3 Pablito, why don’t you stay? Why does everyone leave me?

Leticia

“Good morning, sleepyhead! Or should I say snoring head?” Diego shouts in my ear and then blows a trumpet, which makes me jump up.

This is why I never drink in front of family; I tend to get carried away and then end up waking up the next morning feeling like this.

“¡Me cogí un buen pedo ayer!1”

I sigh as I rub my head. Everything that should make sense doesn’t anymore, including my blurred vision.

“We have a plane to catch!” Diego shouts. It’s as if he wants to kill me.Why does he keep shouting?

“¿Donde vamos?2”

Where does he think we’re going together? We have nowhere to go because he knows. The secret is out, but then Belén said something about learning Japanese. He said I can’t, so why am I still here?

I try to get out of bed but get a rude awakening.

“My clothes!”

It’s as if the sun is piercing through the room, blinding me as he opens the curtains and lets in all the light. Diego is, as usual, in a suit, a gray one this time. He looks good in everything.

Focus, Leticia. You’re naked, and he’s not. And now he’s telling you you’re both going somewhere. I blink and try to focus my eyes, no longer worried about my nakedness underneath the sheet or even how I ended up this way.

“I’ve seen it all before,” he says as he hands me a bathrobe.

“Without my permission.”

“Maybe you should learn to handle your drink.”

Really? Are we debating my drinking at a time like this?

“What is it? Did your contacts get stuck in your eyes? I took them out, besides you don’t need to change the color of your eyes. Your natural dark color is so much better.”

What?
