“¡Diego tiene mala suerte! ¿Porque no voy con Diego en el jet8?”

He avoids looking at my eyes. Raúl is six two, the tallest and widest man I know and he makes The Rock look like a pebble.

“He said that no one keeps him waiting. Not even his own wife. I would do it if I could, but a business ticket is nearly my month’s salary, and I have children and …”

I hold his hand. It is not his fault Diego behaved like this. This is my punishment for thinking I could get my own back on him. He thinks he can punish me. Well, I’m not flying anywhere. Once we leave the hotel, I regret not trying out the sauna. My marriage to Diego is officially or unofficially over. I’m done. I’m not doing anything he says, even if it is through Raúl.

“I’m going to get in that taxi and go home,” I say as Raúl hails one.

“You can’t. Remember you gave up your apartment the day you got married.”

“Then I’ll go and stay with my sis.”

He chuckles nervously, clearly ready to tell me some more bad news.

“You can’t. She said that she needed time away, so she’s going to Spain.”

¡Mierda!9

She did say something about having her surgery as soon as possible, but I didn’t think she would be doing it the next day.

“My cousins.”

He shakes his head. What? Everyone just hopped on a plane to Spain the day after my wedding?

“Diego booked them a cruise. He said it was his wedding present to them.”

I bet he did.

He had it all planned, and no one questioned his motives. Diego is far from a generous man.

“Look, I have a couple of hundred. Take it and grab something to eat once you get through security.”

I shake my head. I can’t be taking his money. I can see what’s happened. I have no means to any cash, so I have to go to Diablo for that.

“You’re going to need it. You’re stopping three times. And you’ll be on layover for hours.”

I nearly drop my new phone. Did he say three times?

“Are you coming in or what?” the taxi driver snaps.

“It’ll be okay. Sometimes, he’s a little dramatic. That’s Diego. You know what he’s like.”

He winks at me, likely to stop me from popping a vein because no doubt he can see I’m clenching my fists and wishing Diego was here so I could give him a piece of my mind.

Diego has made sure I’ll suffer for being late. Now I have to go to Tokyo because I have no other place to go. Why can’t I remember someone’s number by heart? Anyone’s? It’s a risk going there to maybe discover they’re not home and I have no choice but to get on this stupid flight.

“Belén, just sleep. Before you know it, it’ll all be over, and you two will be back home. Maybe con niño!”

No. There’s no fucking way he’s touching me or coming near me again. I’m not touching alcohol, and the last thing I’m even thinking about doing is having his baby.

But Raúl called me Belén. Didn’t Diego tell him the truth? Clearly not. The phone and the envelope with my passport tell me that Diego wants to keep that part quiet. I sit in the taxi with my arms crossed as Raúl shoves the phone and money in my purse. I feel bad for not saying bye or even thanking him.

It’s all Diego’s fault. I’m never like this; I always have a smile on my face. But he’s converted me into an ice princess like my sister. At this rate, I’ll have to stop being so emotional about everything just to keep my damn sanity.

1 I got drunk yesterday.

2 Where are we going?
