“Buenos tardes, Raúl. Has hecho bien, chao.1” I say over the phone before hanging up.

He sounded apologetic, as if he did what I asked him to do but felt sorry for her. This is why I love and hate Raúl. Some bodyguards are emotionless and just act first and think later, if at all, but not Raúl. He’s a good man, and as a family man, which is a dying breed these days in the security business, I can imagine him not wanting Leticia to be upset too much.

That’s my job.

He could have opted for a flight with more stopovers, but he chose a decent one with fewer stopovers and shorter delays.

Leticia will be here within the next twenty-four hours. Raúl gave her a credit card with a limit of only a hundred and fifty dollars, which will most likely be spent on the taxi fare on the way to JFK Airport.

My wedding didn’t go according to plan, it wasn’t so much the ending up with the wrong bride that annoys me but the last few weeks in the office have been so tense because of the Japanese deal which may or may not take place in the next twoweeks. I hate uncertainty, and with Leticia coming in place of Belén, there’s even more of that.

I’m trying to get her a teacher who can help her. I’m shocked by how many speak both English and Spanish here. Impressed, even.

I want to get a female teacher. I don’t know why, but the idea of her being with some man doesn’t sit right with me. Mi primo Carlos says he knows someone who can help, but low and behold, he’s a man.

Maybe I shouldn’t be so protective. I’ll be around all day, but the idea of another man being with her and that man not being me doesn’t sit right with me, it stirs up a wave of jealousy.

He’ll have to really be impressive.

It’s as if I can’t wait for Leticia to get here. I’m all anxious about her flights, and whether she’ll get lost or if something will happen to her that I realize not waiting for her is more a punishment for me than for her.

Maybe I’ll go for a jog, then have something to drink and eat before the interview. She’s a big girl now, but maybe this time I took it a little too far.

No. I can’t think like that. I made the right choice.

But then there’s a little nagging feeling in my head making me doubt I did. I hate it. The only way to get rid of it is to keep myself busy, and this is exactly what I intend to do for the next twenty-four hours.

Iinterviewed the teacher, and he’s perfect for her lessons. He’s had so much experience, and Carlos is reliable, so I doubt he would send him my way if he were a bad teacher.

He knows how particular I am, and I doubt he’ll want to get on my wrong side. I head to the airport to meet Leticia with a bunch of flowers. Not as a way of an apology, but to welcome her to the country. The smug Leticia who spent too much time getting ready whilst trying to annoy me doesn’t land in Tokyo, but rather more disheveled than usual.

“Don’t talk to me!” she snaps as she marches up to me.

What’s up with her shoes? She has managed to break one heel.

So, she’s limping as if she has a fake leg, and her hair is a mess. I wonder if she was snoring on the plane and some of the passengers decided to abuse her for it, because she really looks messed up. The green dress she’s wearing is even ripped. And something stinks.

“What’s that smell?” I ask as I back away from her.

“¡Huelo a mierda2!” she says with her arms open wide.
