I’m not sure what else she expects me to say. Everyone knows this part of the story. If she expects me to elaborate on the topic, then she’s speaking to the wrong guy.

“Yes, but no one talks about him. You must know something.”

Not true. Someone does. Abuela has hired a PI to look for him, but she doesn’t talk about it because until she finds him, there’s nothing to discuss. Besides it makes no difference to me. Before he left, he was the CEO, and I was fresh out of university and working my way up the ranks. We spoke as little as possible. Jorge and I took our roles in the business and while I flourished in my role, he did the complete opposite.

“They said there was a storm and that he insisted on skiing. They haven’t found him. He could be dead.”

She gasps, puts her hand on her heart, and stops walking.

“¡Dios mío!6 Your brother could be dead, and you’re not bothered?”

“It has been six years.”

She avoids my eyes and keeps walking forward as if she knows where she’s going.

“I think he has run away. I don’t think he’s dead. Jorge has always been weak. If he could save a drowning cat, he wouldn’t. He would lie and say he doesn’t know how to swim.”

She chuckles. “He sounds a lot like me. Maybe it would have been better if I did marry him. It sounds as if we have more in common.”

What is she talking about? She’s nothing like him.

Yet, I don’t like the idea of her talking about marrying my brother. The one everyone loved and was heartbroken over about his accident. Jorge could do no wrong in anyone’s eyes. He’s only five years my senior, but butter couldn’t melt in his mouth.

“We’re running late. We need to go,” I chide as we head outside.

“Late for what?”

The driver opens the car door, and she hesitates.

“For your Japanese lesson.”

“What?”

“Your teacher is waiting for you.”

She shakes her head. “I can’t learn Japanese in two weeks. I thought it was some kind of joke. This is supposed to be my honeymoon.”

“It would be, if you weren’t the wrong bride.”

She shifts into the seat. And for a second, I thought I saw her wipe away a tear.

Why do I seem to have a habit of always making her cry?

1 Good afternoon Raul. You did well. Bye.

2 I smell off shit.

3 You’re a bastard.

4 shit.

5 Flight attendant.

6 My God!
