“How are you feeling?”

“Bien. Now, Diego, what did he want?”

He chuckles, and it is the first time he’s smiled or even relaxed a little since I’ve been conscious. It’s a shame that not only did he go to speak to his contact, but he shaved too. I must admit I did like the unshaven, laid-back Diego. The uptight one seems to be coming back the more I get my health back on track.

“He wanted to tell me that he found another factory.”

“Factory?” I repeat, sounding like a parrot.

“Yes, another place where they make the drug you took. It’s a bigger scam than we both anticipated.”

I’m about to ask, and he can probably see the confusion on my face as he sits at the side of the bed and takes my hand.

“You see, you never took a date rape drug. I think this is what I first told you when you woke up.”

I nod my head, because I don’t remember much, but yes, we did have the conversation about what happened and I understood that Hiroshi was trying to rape me.

“Hana and Yuki are both dead.”

I gasp as I put my hand to my mouth. "What happened?”

I confessed to Hana that Diego isn’t really my husband. I think. I don’t remember what happened that night, but I remember telling her about Belén and regretted it afterward.

“Two of the ladies I was out with that night are dead. This means it wasn’t a date rape drug. It was something else? Is this what you’re telling me?”

He nods his head. “Yes. It’s a club, which the owner, who is now missing—or rather, in hiding—set up to trap and bribe rich, influential people, and they either pay up or end up paying the price for taking the drug. The drinks and even the food they serve there have a certain amount of dosage in it.”

I shiver as I think about how lucky I am, and the other ladies weren’t.

“Hana had a heart condition, so the drug killed her. Whereas Yuki took a little too much, maybe she ate and drank the stuff. Who knows? But they found high levels in her blood system, but she was fighting for her life for five days, and then she didn’t make it. They tried to pump the stuff out of her system because her husband refused to pay the price for the antidote.”

My mouth is wide open and I’m shocked as a lump forms in my throat. I’ve been sitting here thinking about time and justworrying about getting out of bed, and those poor ladies died. Their families. Their kids. How are they feeling about all this?

“One night of fun turned out to be a disaster.”

“Leticia, how did you get there? Did one of the ladies tell you that they knew a place or something?”

I shake my head. I’ve replayed the night a thousand times in my head, from when I spoke to Diego after leaving the restaurant. Most of the time, it’s a blur but slowly and surely it’s coming back to me.

“When we came out of the restaurant, a car was waiting for us. I remember Hana asked the driver where we were going? She said that she planned to let us walk a couple of blocks. She didn’t want to go too far.”

“¡Mierda!3 So it was a setup from the start.” He slaps the bed.

“But there were four of you together and no one knows where Sakura is. She was one of the wives who left with you.”

I don’t know what he’s talking about, because she never really said anything. Hana said she was the boring one and I think she decided to leave and go to the place they were talking about.

“That’s it, Sakura said she’s not getting in a car and walked off. Where, I don’t know. I was so mad with you.”

I sob into my hands and then he shifts behind me, to comfort me. I can’t help it as I hold him and cry in his arms.

“We jumped in the car, but I remember Hana saying that she’d never heard of the club. They liked the limo that picked us up and that’s it!” I point to him. “They were drinking in the limo. I wasn’t so much, because I remember feeling sick and I’d drank a little too much at the dinner. My plan was to get to the club, then ditch them and get my things and leave.”

He pulls away from me, breaking the hug. We both stare at each other for a brief second, then I wait for him to saysomething to me, but he doesn’t as he clears his throat and then starts to adjust my pillows again.

“Why do you keep doing that?”

“What?”
