Diego

The doctor said that in a couple of days Leticia can go back to the hotel suite, and then we can think about her going back home, to New York. Though the only place she wants to go back to is Spain.

I’m being selfish by not allowing her to go back. I need her with me, but then her being with me is the reason she nearly died.

Mierda!

I head to the hotel suite and take a long shower, change my clothes, and meet up with Aoto to discuss our next move. My phone vibrates in my pocket. The plan was to meet with Aoto tonight, but after my contact told me about shutting down another factory and Aoto wanting to meet, I knew Leticia has to be protected. She’s the only witness who is still alive, after Sakura has been found dead too.

My associate will stay and protect her, which is fine by me. He’s more than twenty men that could be surrounding the building and I trust him with my life and everyone in my family’s.

I didn’t tell Leticia where I was really heading, I just told her that I was going to the hotel to get a change of clothes and pick up her phone. This is all she’s harping about, wanting to speak to someone other than doctors, nurses, and me.

As I jump in the car, the one Aoto’s provided for me, my phone vibrates, which can only mean one thing. Lucas is calling me back again.

“Hermano1,” I sigh as the car door shuts and I sink into the back seat.

“No. Es tu Abuela2.”

¡Mierda!3

“Diego, you need to get back home. I know you switched off your phone and the only person you would be in contact with is your brother.” She exhales a deep breath. “Are you okay?”

No.

“Yes,” I lie.

“Okay, if you don’t want to tell me the truth, then fine, but don’t lie about it. Is Leticia okay?”

Do I lie again?

“She’ll be fine.”

“I saw the news and I know about the murders there.”

Now, who’s the one lying? I know for a fact that Abuela doesn’t need to watch the news, nor could I imagine her surfing the internet. She still doesn’t understand that concept. Someone told her, and no doubt that someone was Lucas.

“I need you here. Your papá and Jorge are trying to take over, and I can’t stop them unless you’re here to at least stand your ground.”

I chuckle at the idea of it. I’ve never stood my ground whenever it came to those two. Papá says I am a waste of space and has always treated me that way, and he’s had his younger version, Jorge, to back him up. They’re like two peas in a pod, both of them think alike, dress alike, and do everything thesame. Lucas has always been somewhere in the middle and I’ve been the black sheep of the family.

“Some things are more important than business,” I say. I’m trying to hold back the annoyance about both Jorge and Papá wanting to see me, only for them to tell me to hand the company to them. I can’t deal with them right now, I have more important things to deal with.

“Like revenge? You know the one who seeks revenge better get ready to dig two graves. Nothing good comes out of lying let alone revenge. I don’t want to lose my favoritenieto4.”

She’s sweet-talking me, and usually I would play along, but I’m not in the mood. I shouldn’t let Papá and Jorge get to me. Thousands of euros in therapy sessions should have healed that part of me by now, but each and every time they manage to do it to me. They manage to make me feel like the little boy who wishes he were dead.

“Trés dias5. I’ll be home.”

I have to give her a date, or she won’t leave me alone.

“Three days it is, Diego. You need to send me the flight details so I know what time you’re arriving, and then you come straight from landing to the office. Do you understand me?”

“Sí6.”

“And, Diego?”

“Si, Abuela.”
