“Yes.”

Liar. Belén thinks that she’s all cloak and daggers, but she forgets we’ve spent years together, dating and getting to know each other ever since Jorge went missing. Our families have been close friends for years, and in Spain, like a lot of arranged marriages, they are built on trust. Knowing each other’s roots and having the same values and cultures are the most traditional and may seem old-fashioned to some, but mean everything to my grandparents, and especially mi abuela.

“I’ve spent years being groomed for my role. I used to be sent to consultancy events where we had to learn body languages of potential clients. We would be given a questionnaire and be told that by the end of the weekend, or at times week events, we had to know who had a dog called John. What the lady called Rose was wearing on her second day of this event. So, don’t you fucking insult me by bullshitting me. It didn’t work on the day and it’s certainly not working now.”

Belén has tested my patience, she may have fed Leticia that bullshit story and she fell for it, but I know Belén better than anyone, and she loves to lie.

Her scent would once give me the urge to seduce her, now it just repulses me. The idea of waking up to someone like herin my bed, knowing that she would probably betray me in a heartbeat, leaves me with the reassurance that Belén and I are far from compatible.

“Should I come back?” the server asks as Belén now covers her face, and starts to sob. She’s holding the food, and I nod for her to put it on the table.

“Save your crocodile tears. The only thing I want from you is the truth.”

“It’s just, Leticia and I have this pact. This silly game. If a guy is really into us then we both swap to see if the guy really loves us.”

“So, you both thought you would play this game on our wedding day? You didn’t think it was a good time when I took you to the opera. Or when we went to Vegas or anything else. You decided on our wedding day, that you would put me to the test?”

She shakes her head, as she stares me dead in the eye.

“I never decided it. It was Leticia. She wanted to see if you would fall for it. I’m just disappointed you did. You broke my fucking heart, Diego. You still do!”

She grabs her coat and then rushes out of the bar. I don’t know what to think about what she said. At the wedding she told me it was because she couldn’t have kids, and now she’s saying it is because of Leticia.

All of a sudden, the food doesn’t look appetizing and I’ve lost my appetite. I send a message to my contact. I’m not going home tonight, I’ll book a suite at a hotel, just so that I can be alone. I don’t know what to make of what Belén just told me.

I don’t know what to make of it at all.

Leticia

When we were in Tokyo, the extra hours in bed were welcomed, because neither Diego nor I could keep our hands off each other.

I’ve never felt this good being with a guy. Like never. He makes me feel like a woman in all the right ways.

Now, we’re in NY, everything has changed. I’m not sure what time Diego came home, let alone left this morning. I woke up for his associate to tell me that Diego wasn’t around.

I was tired.

Real tired that I just dropped asleep in our bed as soon as I entered the door of his house when we came back from Tokyo. I’ve been to his house a few times to do errands, and now it’s weird seeing my clothes in his closet. A nice kinda weird, but still seeing it as my home is going to take some getting used to, being with Diego not so much.

Diego is at the office, and I’m so excited, because I’m meeting with both my cousins Cristina and Blanca for lunch. Diego said he had things to catch up on, and apparently Belén is in the office taking over my role and still pretending to be me by working as Diego’s secretary.

“Prima!” Cristina yells as she jumps up and down outside Polpette on Upper West Side. Their meatballs are to die for, I've been here a couple of times with Cristina. Blanca, her sister, wanted to check it out too.

“¡Guapa1!” Blanca says as she kisses me on the cheek.

“DidDiablo2 give you a pay rise? you look beautiful and I’m sure this suit is Prada!”

Cristina would know, she’s into designer clothes. I can feel my face getting red, and I quickly pull my hands behind my back to take off my ring. I’m going to tell them, I don’t want them to find out now. Especially when I’m hungry and in dire need of something to eat.

“Blanca, I can say the same thing for you too.”

“Well, Diablo, as you like to call him, put us on that cruise around the Caribbean with unlimited expenses. I went shopping.”

Yes, he put the whole family on a cruise to make sure that I had no one to contact and I had to go to Tokyo with him.How can I forget?

Cristina shakes her head. “We all did. Especially your parents.”
