He nods as he stands up. “It seems that we are.”

“What about your meetings?” she snaps.

“Cancel them.”

“But they’re here and besides, you only just got back. You’ve been gone for a month.”

I don’t need reminding that I’ve been gone, but her presence irritates me. Especially after what she told me yesterday.

I stand up from behind my desk and stride towards her, while not losing eye contact. I stand in front of her and bark, “Cancel them.”

She nods her head while trembling, and then moves away from me, as if she’s scared that I will spit fire from my mouth and burn her to the ground. It’s as if the sight of her just awakens the beast in me. She looks just like Leticia, but her presence just upsets me each and every time.

“That’s a bit harsh. It’s not like you to be aggressive.”

“She annoys me. As soon as I get back, I’m firing her.”

“Why not just do it now?”

I sit back at my desk, thinking Lucas is right. I’m acting as if there’s some reason why I can’t get rid of her this moment.

Leticia has sent me messages, and I’ve not ignored them, but I’ve found a new love for emojis. There’s no way that she won’t think something isn’t up, because she knows how much I hate them. I remember her telling me that I should try sending texts with emojis so that people don’t think of me as some kind of ogre. So, I sent a thumbs-up, letting her know everything was all right with her last message:Is everything all right? I feel like you’re ignoring me.

Maybe a thumbs-up, wasn’t the right emoji to use. Anyway, I can’t think about that right now as I start typing to HR. I let them know they should give Belén, who is still legally working here as Leticia, triple what she is supposed to have in benefits and give her a 10k bonus on top of that.

I’ll talk to mi abuela about this decision, no doubt she’s not going to be happy, but I’ll deal with her when I’m good and ready.

The whole thing makes no sense. Belén came to work here as my secretary and she’s overqualified to do that. I’m back and I’m leaving again, but this time only for the weekend. I’ll make sure that my phone is with me at all times.

“Done.”

“Nothing about your marriage to Belén made any sense,” Lucas sighs as he stops throwing the ball in the air.

“What do you mean?”

“You were always possessive of things you own. Even as a kid, you would never let anyone play with your toys.”

I shake my head, because I have no idea what he’s talking about. Anything I used to do back then is in the past. I’m a man now, and I have no idea what his point is.

“The idea that you would allow your bride-to-be todate, let alone fuck other guys.”

We’d been through this before, I can’t believe that he is still bringing it up.

“I told you …”

“You told me that you didn’t want her to be curious and one day have an affair because she’d only been with one guy all her life. This way she could get it all out of her system, so when you married she wouldn’t have to compare. Yeah, yeah. I know what you said, Diego, but it made no sense then and it certainly doesn’t now.”

I avoid his stare, because the idea of Leticia being with anyone before me, I would kill again. I’ve been her first and only, and that’s exactly how I intend to keep it.

Or do I?

This whole fucking revelation by Belén has me doubting everything, including if Leticia truly loves me. I’ve been confident of that for days, now I’m not so sure.

“I was there on the day. She’s the one who didn’t turn up,” I remind him.

“Ask yourself why, little brother. Ask yourself why.”

I sitand ponder, knowing exactly what he’s getting at. I would never marry for love. I saw what it did to my dad. He lost the only woman he loved and ever since then, he’d thrown his own son out of the house and hated the air he breathed.
