“Leticia. What is it?”

“Are you kidding me right now, Diego? What is it? We were in Japan and I nearly get killed and we come back and you’re treating me like I’m the unwanted bride.”

She sums it up in a nutshell, but it’s not as clear-cut as she makes it out to be.

“It’s complicated!” I snap as I sit in the limo, thinking I don’t need to explain myself to her. “And besides, we’re not technically married.”

Mierda!

“Say what you want to hurt me. Because that seems to be all you’re good at doing. Get a lawyer and I’ll be there to sign.”

Before I can say another word, she hangs up. I want to call her back and apologize, but then I know it’s no good. The damage has already been done.

“When are you going to grow up, little brother?” Lucas says, cutting the silence as we head to the airport. I ignore him as I start sending a message to my cousin in Madrid, telling him about all the things I need there. He should sort it out before I arrive. I’m not packing or even thinking about stopping home before heading there. No, I’ll go directly there.

“You shouldn’t say things you don’t mean. How will you feel if Leticia now decides to go off with another? Will that make you happy?”

“We haven’t even divorced yet, and you’re talking about her running down the aisle with another.”

He nods his head. “If you don’t think she’s a catch then someone else will. Be careful of how you treat her. If I were you I would get on the phone and apologize. But I’m not. If you wantto behave like a fool, then so be it. But don’t act like she doesn’t mean anything to you. You’re not good at pretending.”

On that note, I close my eyes and ignore my brother. He knows the drill. It means I don’t want to talk about it. I wish I could sleep, but the words I said to her are eating at my soul. I do what I’m best at doing at times like this, I drink. I start pouring shots, not to sleep but just to forget and ignore the fact that the woman I’m falling for just makes me get into the habit of hurting her over and over again.

It’s best that she stays as far away from me as possible, because loving me isn’t good for anyone, especially someone as beautiful as Leticia.

Leticia

Iknow being married to Diego can drive someone insane, especially me.

But then I remember what happened that night in Tokyo as if it were only yesterday, being stubborn and trying to get back at him nearly cost me my life. I won’t be making that mistake ever again.

“Cristina, are you sure you want to come along?” I ask as I stand at the door of her apartment. She’s packing a bag, ready for us to hit Madrid.

“I can’t let you go to the Daganzo festivos nor see the Madrid game alone.”

“I won’t be alone, Lucas and Diego will be there. Besides, I don’t like the way he spoke to me, then he buys me first-class tickets and apologizes and I’m supposed to go running.”

“Oh, please. You love it, Leticia. You love him. Otherwise you wouldn’t have come back from Japan and be living with him like you’re a married couple. This is what you want.”

I bite my lip and avoid making eye contact. I didn’t tell her everything, about what happened in Japan, and I feel more comfortable telling her everything that happened there, seeing as it’s just the two of us.

We have enough time to get ready, and the car will be at her apartment in a couple of hours. Diego said he’s giving me enough time to get ready.

“I need to tell you something.¡Sentate!1”

She pauses and it’s as if all the blood drains from her face as she is no longer smiling but frowning.

“You’re scaring me.”

I know, but as I take her hand and look into her dark eyes, I know I can tell her anything and she would never judge me. They say sometimes talking about things makes someone feel better. And I sit and hold her hand and tell her about how Diego punished me with the trip to Japan. Then, he sacked the teacher as he got jealous. She found that part funny, but I haven’t finished the part of the story where I tell her that I nearly died.

“At last! I’m so damn proud of you. I did think, but …” She giggles as she hugs and congratulates me. But the smile turns to tears as I explain about arguing with Diego and it leading to me being kidnapped, nearly raped, and dying. Diego attended the funerals and the guy who did it is dead, but I missed out the part about thinking Diego could be the one to have blood on his hands. I made out it was his business associate who wanted revenge for the death of his wife.

“So, no one else will be killed from the drug. And that guy Hosso, whatever his name is, he’s dead!”
