“We need to leave. This is blasphemy!” One man grunts as he leaves the box, and one by one they start to file out. They shake their heads, and one man spits on the ground as he leaves.

I shake my head, because I thought only the French did that.

“Come on, Lee, let’s leave. It’s too painful to be around Cristina right now. Atletico fan. I never would have guessed,” Diego says as he holds my hand.

Did he just call me Lee?

Now he’s giving me a pet name. I feel smitten as he takes my hand.

“No. I’m not leaving her here, anything could happen to her,” I say in fear for Cristina’s life.

After all, as Diego said, this is football and they’re not known for their gentle tactics off the pitch.

“If she puts her shirt on and leaves quietly then nothing will happen to her,” Lucas smirks as if he’s playing with Cristina, and then it hits me.

“This is a prank, isn’t it?” I ask as I tug at Diego’s hand to stay with Cristina.

“It is indeed,” Cristina says as she high-fives Lucas.

“Why would you do such a thing? It’s cruel. Inhuman,” Diego says. There he goes with the dramatics, reminding me that I will never watch or even talk about football with Diego again. He becomes a completely different species. It’s as if he turns half-human and half-ape.

“It would have been funnier if Atletico had won,” Lucas says. Clearly he’s in on it.

“Lucas bet that I wouldn’t wear anything related to Atletico and I bet that I could do it.”

When did they make this decision? But they’re both staring and smiling at each other. I can tell that they made this decision while Diego and I were both in our suite.

Hmmm.

Diego whispers in my ear, “Are you seeing what I’m seeing?”

“Si,” I smile as both Lucas and Cristina tease each other and talk about the way the rest of the people acted who were in the box.

“The night is still young, we need to hit somewhere to end the night,” Cristina says, but then as her eyes clasp on both Diego and I hugging each other, she winks at me.

“Or maybe you guys want to have a nightcap?” she asks.

I refuse, the four of us are out and there’s no dumping each other. Besides, Diego and I have the rest of our lives together. Tonight has been fun, it’s the first time since Diego and I have been together that we’ve been out with other people. Lucas is Diego’s best friend and Cristina is mine. We need to get used to being around each other, and to know each other better. I can’t think of a better time to do it than tonight.

“No. I know just the place we can go.” Diego winks as he takes my hand and leads me out of the box.

“Of course he does,” Lucas says. “He’s the partygoer.”

Really?

It’s as if the more time I spend with Diego, the more he surprises me. Then, I remember how he danced at our wedding. He can move his hips—well, not only on the dance floor but in the bedroom too.

Leaving the vibrant chaos of Santiago Bernabeu behind, my cousin, my husband, his brother, and I find ourselves in a sleeklimo headed to one of Madrid's top cocktail bars, The Opulent Twist.

As we pull up to the entrance, the exterior gleams with subtle opulence, promising an unforgettable experience. The doorman welcomes us, and we step into an atmosphere of understated glamour. The bar's interior is bathed in warm hues, with plush seating and a dazzling display of spirits lining the shelves.

With a sense of excitement, Cristina exclaims, "This place is incredible! Have you been here before, Lucas?”

Lucas grins. "First time, and I'm ready for some top-notch cocktails. We have a lot to celebrate!”

Apart from Real Madrid winning I can’t think of what he’s talking about.

“Do we?”
