Reluctantly Silla did as asked, and even more reluctantly, let go of my hand. "I will be right here," I promised, again ignoring Meloch's curious glance in my direction.

Silla folded her hands over her stomach, clutching Rygg's cloak around her, whileher eyes locked on me.

The doors hissed open, allowing two warriors in, accompanied by a ragtag group of five humans.

"Ah, good"—Meloch waved at the other techs—"run scans on them."

The humans appeared frightened and unable to understand us, but the Cryons had cowed them enough to follow gesticulated orders.

"They will need language transplants," I remarked.

"It will be done, Lord Protector, after the scans. The stress of the translators may falsify the machines' readings," Meloch asserted.

I waved my hand. The other humans were of no concern to me, other than to be in as healthy a state as possible when they were brought to Daryus. They would be his headache from then on. After all, they are his gifts, my mind added demonically.

"Their skin colors differ from Lady Silla's," Meloch observed.

"As I said, the Cryons did something to her. When I first saw her, her skin looked more like his." I pointed at one of the humans who was about to lie down on the medbooth's bed. When I pointed at him, he jerked.

"Hmm, interesting." Meloch rubbed his chin, intrigued.

"The readings indicate she is healthy." A tech looked up from his screen, holding it out to Meloch, who took it. Iwatched him intently as his brows furrowed and he paged through the screen.

Another tech stepped forward, having finished his readings on one of the other humans.

"We need more female readings, some of their organs, blood analysis, and hormones will be different from that of the males," Meloch said, already holding out his hand to another tech, who offered his screen after having finished on a woman, who thankfully seemed about Silla's age and built.

"Hmm, the only difference I can make out is that Lady Silla appears to be in a heightened state of fertility," Meloch observed after finishing comparing the two reports.

"I beg your pardon, sir, but look here." A merrily medtech pointed at a reading and I stepped over to them to see for myself. "Her libido has been enhanced."

"A side effect of the aphrodisiac the lord protector already mentioned," Meloch said.

"Is it reversible?" I wanted to know.

Inside the medbooth Silla hammered against the glass.

"Is it finished? Open it," I ordered after I received a nod.

"What is happening?" Silla asked the moment thebooth's lid opened.

"You appear healthy enough for the moment, Lady Silla. We will need some time to evaluate the results and we will need more samples," Meloch explained.

I held Silla's hand while a different tech took multiple samples from her, ranging from blood to hair, and saliva swabs.

"You will notify me when you find something?" I assured.

"Of course, Lord Protector."

"If you need more subjects, find Ryggs."

"Vra, Lord Protector."

I helped Silla to her feet. "Come, can you walk?"

"I… I think so," she said, putting one foot in front of the other. As I stared at her feet I realized she didn't have any shoes.

"This won't do," I declared and lifted her back into my arms. "You know where to find me," I told Meloch and strode out of the med sector with her.
