"We would be more than honored to be part of your empire, Emperor Daryus," Crough chirped excitedly.

"I bet you would." Daryus's jaw worked. "The Pandraxian Empire is very selective as to who they invite to join."

"We would make an excellent addition and you know it, Emperor," Crough tempted.

Daryus stopped in front of Crough. "I think that's enough for today, I need to speak to my lord protector. We will reconvene in the morning."

"As you wish, Emperor." Crough bowed slightly, and followed by Sir Priough, was about to leave the hall, when—with a cry of outrage—Eric threw himself at him. "Die you piece of shit!"

I pushed Silla behind me and jumped forward to grab the human off King Crough, but another human attacked me in midjump, pushing my body against a pillar.

Guards scrambled, as did a furiously bellowing Daryus.

I kicked the human who had tackled me off me and launched forward, grabbing another man who had joined the fray by his collar and threw him against the same pillar where his unconscious brethren lay.

Eric straddled Crough with his hands closed around Crough's throat, squeezing it tight, while Crough thrashed underneath him.

"Die, motherfucker, die!" Eric spat.

Daryus got a hold of his hair and pulled with one hand, while his fist hit him repeatedly in the face with the other. His guards were busy keeping the other outraged humans off our emperor.

I grudgingly admired the human's tenacity. While squeezing Crough's neck did nothing but shut him up, he took the beating Daryus dished out on him well enough.

What he didn't know was that Cryons didn't have a windpipe like humans and us. Cryons took in air through pores throughout their body. Where it was evenly distributed totheir cells.

Stupid human, I thought bitterly.Know your enemy, one of the first rules in the warrior's code.

It all happened soquickly that I didn't have time to react, not that I would have been able to do much of anything. Garth had trained me the last few days, but I doubted that my skills went beyond anything other than slugging Susan yet.

I did however manage to intercept Kevin as he was about to swing himself against one of the human men attacking Emperor Daryus's guards to keep them from reaching Eric.

"Let me go!" Kevin wailed, kicking at me.

"Let them deal with it, Kev," I panted. Who would have thought a thirteen-year-old weighed that much?

"Put your weapons down," Garth yelled at a guard who was about ready to fire his blaster at Eric choking Crough. Secretly I cheered him on, but was—thankfully—too busy with the teenager to voice my glee. I doubted it would have gone over well.

Finally Garth and Daryus pried Eric off Crough and the guards subdued the three other men left standing. The unconscious two by the pillar Garth had brought down were bound as well and carried out.

"What kind of empire are you running here?" Crough demanded, holding his hopefully hurting-like-hell throat.

"Vicious animals, that's what they are," Sir Priough spat as green blood ran down his chin from where he had been hit.

"That was not fair." Kevin pouted as I let go of him.

"I apologize for this," Daryus said between clenched teeth. "They will be punished, you have my word."

"Punished for attacking the men responsible for killing our people?" I cried. "What kind of justice is that?"

"Garth, control yourgift." Daryus's voice sounded controlled, dangerously so.

Red-hot anger rushed through me and I was sure my eyes shot flames at the emperor. A hand touched my shoulder, and snarling I turned to come face to chest with Garth. Looming over me, he imperceptibly shook hishead. His eyes held a silent warning, one I caught even through the red haze in my head.

"Do all these humans act this contemptuously?" Daryus still stared at me.

Boy, you have no idea, my mind supplied and I barely bit my tongue to hold back the words I was sure I would regret.

"That is some kind ofgift." Daryus turned his wrath on Crough.
