Page 52 of Bound in Darkness

“I… I don’t really know.” I lift one shoulder. “Just listening and being here helps. Although part of me was humiliated you were witnessing it, the other part held onto you like a lifeline. I was able to block out those who were watching and chanting…” A flush creeps up my neck and into my face. Being raped is awful, but being raped in front of a group of people is even worse.

Chase’s voice is rough, like the time I slid onto a bunch of gravel that ripped my knee open. “I hate that he did that to you while the other bastards watched.” His face turns red from his fury, and his nostrils flare when he says, “I’ll make him pay, Mackenzie. I promise.”

I’m overwhelmed by the emotion in his eyes. They burn with a desire for vengeance. But it’s what is beneath the vengeance that claims my heart and soul. The flames of love burning in his eyes are stronger than any other emotion he’s feeling.

I want a chance to explore it. I’m desperate for the chance to have a normal life where we can be normal young adults in love. Free from crazy mask-wearing demons and their twisted rituals on a quest for the ultimate dark power.

Hope blossoms inside me. We will get the hell out of this fucking house of horrors.

My voice is a breathy whisper as I lift my bound hands to his chin. “Chase. I…” The words get stuck inside my throat, the fear of rejection causing the words to slam to a halt before they slip out of my mouth. I’m nearly positive he loves me, but what if his morals are too strong? What if he rejects me?

My thoughts are cut off by the rumble of sincerity in his low, raspy tone. “I know, angel. You don’t have to say it. I know.”

Then his lips are against mine, easing all my fears and numbing the trauma as I lose myself in his kiss. I sigh, wishing I could run my fingers through his hair as his soft mouth explores mine.

When he pulls back, a small smile curls his lips before his eyes open. My breath hitches and my heart stutters. Chase isn’t just handsome as hell with his chiseled, boyish good looks, those full kissable lips, and eyes the color of sunlight shining through a glass of whiskey. He’s beautiful. His loyalty, morals, and devotion are unmatched.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course. You can ask me anything?” His whiskey eyes turn to mine.

I have no idea why I’m asking this, but I have to know. “When you joined the Emersen track team and became a sensation and all the girls were fawning over you.” I blow out a breath, hating the jealousy that flows through my veins. “I’d forgotten something in my locker that I needed for an assignment, so Jamie drove me back to the school. She stayed in the car while I ran inside to get it. I grabbed it from my locker and was walking down the hallway when I heard voices outside the locker room.” I don’t know why I’m telling him this. “I saw Anna Martin kiss you. Her hands were all over you. She dropped to her knees, licking her lips as she stared up at you.”

“Kenz—”

He says my name like a warning, but I persevere. I have to know.

Squeezing my eyes shut, I blurt out, “Did she give you a blow job?”

A long pause ensures. I know the answer, and I hate it. I want to find Anna and scratch her eyes out for touching him.

“Angel, look at me.” When I turn my fiery gaze to his, a slight smile curls his lips. “She meant nothing to me. I wanted you, but I couldn’t have you.”

“I know.” My voice is small as I try to hide my irrational anger. “I’ve heard rumors from a few girls that you knew what you were doing. They said…” Bile rises up my throat, but I push it down. “They said you knew how to fuck.”

He pauses for several long beats. “Kenz. I’m not gonna lie to you and tell you I’m a virgin, cause I’m not. I’m not an asshole though, so any girl I was with, I was going to do my best to please.” Soft eyes plead with me to believe him. “I lost my virginity at sixteen. One night, when my sister was asleep, I snuck outside. I couldn’t breathe. Elsie has been so withdrawn and I didn’t know how to help her. I felt like a failure.” Squeezing his eyes closed, his face contorted, lost in the memory. “I was leaning against a tree. One of the girls who lived nearby was outside smoking. She offered me one. Said I looked miserable and like I could use either a good smoke or a fuck. I didn’t smoke, but I thought she was joking. She wasn’t.”

I wince, hating that this stranger got to be with him in such an intimate way.

“That was my first time. It became a regular thing. Sometimes outside by the tree. Sometimes I snuck her into my bedroom while Elsie slept.”

“Was she your age?”

He shakes his head. “She was almost eighteen. I’d been a virgin and she enjoyed teaching me….”

Angry tears fill my eyes, and I immediately roll my head, sightlessly staring out the window.

“Hey.” Strong fingers touch my chin, turning my head to his. “Stop it. There’s no reason for tears.” He gently kisses each one away before lifting his head. “You were the first girl that mattered to me. The first one who captured my heart, and you’ve never let it go.” He shakes his head, awe on his face. “The first time I laid eyes on you, it was like fireworks exploding in the night while butterflies danced in my stomach.” He gives me that smile he reserves only for me. “You’re all I see, angel. All I’ve ever wanted.”

Like a pin popping a balloon, my jealousy and anger deflates. Our foreheads fall together as we squeeze one another’s fingers.

“Onlyyou.” Then his lips capture mine, and the desire takes over. Kissing his soft, full lips is my personal brand of heaven in this godforsaken hellhole we’re in.

When we finally come up for air, a smile curves Chase’s lips. “Did I convince you?”

I bite my lip, trying to hide my smile. “Ummm… maybe.”

“Maybe, huh?” The seductive gleam in his eyes draws me in like a moth to a flame. “Need more convincing?”
