Page 57 of Bound in Darkness

Oh, angel girl. I wish I could hold you.

But all I can do is stare helplessly as my body is rendered useless by the drugs flowing through my system. Orpheus seems to be patiently waiting, as though he knows the full effects haven’t gripped me yet, and he’s feeding off the energy of the impending storm, lying in wait, ready to strike like a snake.

Another loud crack of thunder rumbles in the air, louder and closer. Mackenzie’s body thrashes, her long lashes fluttering but not opening. “Chase.” It’s a low, plaintive moan, full of pain and fear, as she stretches her bound hands in front of her.

I’m here, angel. Roll to your side and reach your hands out.

The first raindrop hits, splattering against the window pane. I glare at Orpheus, who squats at the foot of our bed, biding his time.

The rumble of thunder is so loud it causes the attic to shake. Mackenzie gives a startled gasp, her eyes popping wide open in terror.

“I’m here.” My words sound jumbled in my head, and I wonder if she hears them over her rising panic or if this is all inside my head from whatever drug I was injected with.

Mackenzie turns her wide, panicked eyes to mine, white showing around her amber irises. She’s hyperventilating as the storm takes her back to her worst memory, removing her from the attic and putting her in the passenger seat of the car, her dead brother beside her.

“Chase.” She rolls, her arms rigid as she reaches out and grazes my hands. I feel her touch on my skin, but I can’t reciprocate it. My limbs are useless, no matter how much effort I’m exerting as I will myself to wrap my fingers around hers.

“Listen to me, Kenz.” My voice sounds slurred to my ears, but I keep talking, hoping she understands what I’m trying to communicate. “Remember what I told you. Use it to get through?—”

Mackenzie slips from my useless grip, her hands sliding away as Orpheus drags her across the attic floor.

Nooo!

Inwardly, I’m thrashing like a warrior, twisting, turning, and leaping over every obstacle in my way to get to my girl, who is being held hostage by the evil villain. Outwardly, I’m lying here, motionless, whimpering and sobbing like a helpless little bitch.

Orpheus rips the ropes from her wrists, revealing ugly dark bruises and ligature marks. He pins her beneath the heavy weight of his body, holding down her arm as he lifts the hem of her shirt with the other. She struggles and fights against him, but he’s so much stronger than she is. Within seconds, the shirt is off, and she’s lying naked on the floor beneath him.

He undoes his pants, pulling his cock out, those soulless black eyes are locked on me.

“You motherfucker,” I rage. It comes out slow and distorted, but I don’t stop. “I’m going to violently kill you, asshole. Your day is coming. Sooner than later. I’ll make you fucking beg but won’t show you a drop of mercy.”

He grins at me as he pins Mackenzie’s arms above her head, then thrusts inside her so hard her entire body is shoved closer to the mattress I’m lying on.

I’m sweating and shaking as Mackenzie’s horrified screams ring out around the room. She’s terrified from the storm, panicked from her memories of the past, and now she’s being raped.

The clouds overflow, rain pounding against the windows like the overflowing banks of a raging river. I wonder if it might shatter the glass. Even though we aren’t small enough to fit through those bars, I’d relish in this fucking house of horrors being destroyed.

Vengeance crawls up my throat as the tears pour down my cheeks like buckets of rainwater being dumped from the sky. The blood rushes through my ears as my heart beats like a drum. As he thrusts harder inside her, making her scream from pain and fear, my chest tightens so much it’s hard to breathe. My jaw feels like it’s going to crack from how hard I’m clamping down.

“Chase.” Her fingers flex against the ancient wooden flooring as she cranes her head, barely able to see me.

But I have a perfect vantage point from where I sit. It makes the bile rise in my throat as Orpheus violently defiles the woman I love, and I can’t do a fucking thing about it. Tears of frustration and helplessness take over as I sob out her name. “Mackenzie.”

The monster is delighting in our fear and powerlessness. It’s evident all over his sickening face as he pounds into her, pushing her closer to me.

Orpheus pulls out, flipping Mackenzie onto her stomach. Her eyes land on mine, bloodshot with tears and snot streaking her face. She’s a mess, just like me.

“Angel.” I reach for her, expecting it to lie there, useless. But when it moves the slightest bit, hope rushes through me. “Reach for my hands,” I brokenly whisper.

She stretches as far as she can. Orpheus grabs a handful of her blonde hair, violently shoving himself back inside her. Her hands curl, nails digging into the floor so hard she scratches jagged claw marks into it. “I-I can’t.”

But she doesn’t stop fighting to reach me.

Fueled by her actions, I fling my arms out, getting them the farthest away from me than I have since I was injected. They are on the edge of the mattress, almost touching hers.

Orpheus pounds into her, making her scream. The force is enough that she’s shoved forward, her fingertips gripping mine.

I barely have any strength, but I cling to her with all I have. She clings to my fingertips like a woman hanging over the edge of a steep cliff.
