Amber eyes lock on mine, and relief flows through her, her overly tight muscles uncoiling and relaxing her pinched facial expression.

“Mackenzie,” I whisper, horrified at the shit these deranged assholes think of. She’s strapped inside the wooden box in a way that reminds me of the Barbie dolls my sister used to get when she was young. One of us had to cut the doll from the bindings to get her out of the box.

Son of a bitch. Those fuckers.

Orpheus gestures to Rosario and she descends the stairs. Once she reaches the bottom, she walks over to a big red button and hits it. Shards of glass rain down, as though someone is turning boxes of it upside down, the contents spilling in front of the wooden box and over the steps.

With a satisfied smile, Orpheus gestures for Rosario to head to the ring. Once she climbs the steps and slips between the ropes, she heads to a spot beside him, bowing slightly.

Orpheus’s deep voice rumbles through the room, echoing off the ancient walls as he gestures toward Mackenzie. “The winner getsher.” He turns to me, a sinister look in his eyes as he sneers. “Course, I’m not going to make it easy. The winner must walk over broken glass to get her.”

The cult chants as my heart sinks into my bare feet. My gaze moves from Mackenzie’s trembling form to my opponent across the ring. His gaze is locked on Mackenzie, staring at her like she’s a piece of meat and he’s starving.

Fuck. The massive motherfucker clearly wants her.

Adrenaline courses through my body, making me forget my aches and pains. I have exactly one person in this entire world that I live for.Mackenzie.

Everything is on the line. I need to win this fight. No matter what.

I underestimate my opponent at every turn. I assumed his large size would slow him down, but it hasn’t. On top of that, he’s cunning and smart, blocking my moves and countering them with massive punches and kicks that leave me bloody, breathless, and seeing stars.

My blurry eyes focus on Mackenzie, watching her yank against the restraints, tears streaking her pale face.

My weary body is exhausted and for the first time, a sense of doubt fills me. As much as I vowed to protect her, I’ve repeatedly failed. And right now, I’m getting my ass kicked. What chance do I have of saving her?

Regret and sorrow fill me as her eyes plead with mine. Her shaky voice cuts through the haze as the cult cheers for my opponent in the ring. “P-Please, Chase. D-do it for m-me.”

I squeeze my eyes closed.God, I want more than anything to win for her.

Yet my injured, beaten body is so worn down and I’m facing a fucking mountain of a young man, who is obviously a skilled fighter. The deck is stacked against me.

Suddenly, Daemon moves so he’s in my line of vision. He mouths to me, “Use what you learned yesterday, boy. You have it in you.”

His words baffle me, yet a faint hope blossoms inside me.I can do this. I have to. For Mackenzie.I roll to my side and slowly stagger to my feet.

I sway slightly as we face off again. This time, I wait until he throws the first punch, just barely dodging it. I swing and miss. His next punch connects with my face, then my stomach. As I sink down to my knees, he stalks around me in a circle, a smug smile on his face.

He looks behind me, licking his lips. “I can’t wait to get my hands on her. I’m gonna fuck her tight cunt until it bleeds, then I’ll make her suck the blood off my dick before destroying her tight asshole.”

Rage like I’ve never felt before surges through me, my entire body shaking uncontrollably. There’s a roaring noise in my ears as adrenaline rushes through me like a raging river during a flood. The urge to beat him to death, his bones cracking beneath my hands as his blood flows like lava, has the room turning red.

With a guttural roar, I leap to my feet, punching him square in the balls. When he doubles over, I throw one punch, then another, and another. All reason has fled as I unleash the pent-up fury I’ve been holding onto for years.

My shitty life rolls before my eyes. After my sister took her life, I had nothing left. No one in this world who gave a fuck about me. The days spent in the hospital room were bleak and empty, my loneliness wrapping around my throat like a hand, slowly choking me to death.

Until Mackenzie walked through the door. Looking back, it hits me it was love at first sight for me.

Now, this piece of shit is threatening to rape the woman I love. I’m fucking sick of these fuckers thinking they can hurt her and take what belongs tome.

I’m beating on the guy the entire time I’m dwelling on my past, working out on my issues on his face and body. A tiny glimmer of reason flows through my veins as I pause with my fist in the air, covered in blood, staring down at him with a calmness that hides the rage inside.

“What’s your name?”

He coughs, blood splattering on my face. “G-Gage.”

I nod, wiping a hand over my face. “Your first mistake was looking at my girl, Gage. And your last mistake is thinking you can touch what’smine.”

With every ounce of strength left in my exhausted, battle-ridden body, I beat the shit out of him. I know Mackenzie probably thinks I’m a damned monster, and maybe I am. But this asshole isn’t getting near her.
