“Breathe, sweetheart. You’re okay. Breathe with me.” The urgency in his tone and the pleading in his eyes finally caused my body and mind to fuse together.

“C-Chase.”

He nods, tears filling his eyes and streaming down his cheeks. “I’m here, angel. I’ve got you.”

Something soft is beneath my back as I’m horizontal. Chase’s hands are all over my body, infusing me with a sense of safety as I finally release the panic. My breathing slows as I blink up at him. “I’m not dying, right?”

He shakes his head. “No, angel. You’re not dying.” He presses his lips to my forehead. “Promise.”

A commotion across from me draws my attention. Chase jerks back, his arms tightening around me.

Rosario’s long dress swishes as she runs into the room. “What the hell happened?”

I blink. I’ve never heard her shout or swear. She looks shocked and ruffled.

In a flash, Orpheus stomps over, his hand squeezing her throat. “Who the fuck are you to raise your voice at me?” He lifts her off her feet, one hand gripping her neck. “You don’t fuckingeverquestion me, Rosario.”

I shoot to a sitting position, fear making me tremble. “No. Don’t hurt her.”

Orpheus is oblivious to my words as he shakes her in the air. Rosario’s nails dig into his arms, trying to break his hold.

Then a metal bar slams into Orpheus’s back, causing him to crumble. Rosario falls to the floor, squirming free as his hold on her breaks. The bar slams again against Orpheus’s back, then his head, knocking him flat on his face.

“You motherfucker,” Chase screams, striking him again. “You fucking locked my girl in a coffin with a glass lid and dumped fucking spiders on her.” He hits him again, crimson spraying the room.

Rosario shakily climbs to her feet. “Chase. Stop.” She extends her hands, her large eyes pleading.

Footsteps grow louder, pounding into the room as Daemon draws to a stop. His eyes scan the room before going back to Chase hitting Orpheus. “What the hell?”

He runs toward Chase, and Chase whips around, the metal bar poised to swing. My fingers curl into the back of the chair I’m draped on, unable to process what is happening.

“Give me that.” Daemon holds out a hand.

“The only way you’re getting this is across your head, asshole.” Chase tightens his grip, ready to swing. “Now get the fuck away from me.”

I’m so intent on the murderous rage in Chase’s eyes that I don’t realize Orpheus has gotten to his feet until he grabs Chase, knocking the metal bar from his hands.

Orpheus whips Chase around, his face resembling a demon from hell as he roars, “You’re gonna pay for that.” His fist connects with Chase’s face, the crack so loud it reminds me of the glass shattering.

“Stop.” Daemon manages to block Orpheus’s next hit, shoving Chase out of the way. As he falls to the floor, I’m on my feet, running over to him.

“Oh, God, Chase.” I smooth my hands over his hair, pushing it away from his face.

He’s not moving. I lean closer to his face, searching for his breath.

Rosario moves beside me, pushing me back slightly so she can examine Chase. “He’s breathing, but he’s unconscious.”

Daemon and Orpheus are screaming at one another. Bits and pieces of their fight draw my attention to them. Daemon points his finger at Orpheus, demanding to know why Killian killed his best friend and kidnapped his daughter.

“You were disloyal,” Orpheus shouts. “Killian saw you at the bar with him. How do you think we knew about Arianna?”

“I wasn’t disloyal. I was concerned because you’re going off the fucking rails.” Daemon and Orpheus are nose to nose as he points a finger in Orpheus’s broad chest. “So what, you lied to this kid, telling him you were going to admit him to your inner circle, and then what? Kill all of them?”

“If he would’ve been loyal, I would have let him replace you,” Orpheus screams. “He’s good. He almost had me convinced.” Orpheus throws a disgusted look at Chase’s prone body.

I whimper, tightening my arms protectively around Chase.

“You were going to sacrifice Arianna in her place and let the boy and girl live?” Daemon screams, pointing this finger at Chase and me, his face scarlet from rage.
