“Thank you, Myrina,” she replied, squeezing my hand once. “Know, though, that I’m always here for you. No matter what it is, you can tell me anything. Nothing shocks me that easily. Believe me.”

“I’ll keep it in mind,” I returned, then mustered all my courage. “What helps with heartbreak?”

Aspasia looked at me with concern. "We're not talking about Alex here, are we? You two seem to be avoiding each other, but it didn't appear like heartbreak. It's more like a fight."

Ashamed, I lowered my head. Aspasia sighed once briefly. "You don't have to tell me. And I won't tell anyone either. I only want to advise you to be honest with Alex. He deserves it."

“Yes, I know!” I agreed dejectedly. “I really need to talk to him, but I need some more time.”

“I understand that.” Aspasia unexpectedly increased the pace and pulled me with her through the tunnel. “But for now, let’s take care of your heartbreak!”

Shortly after, we reached the great hall where the Amazons and escaped women of New York were hiding.

"Girls, someone here needs a girls' night!" shouted Aspasia in a loud voice, and immediately, everyone scurried around. It was almost like being in a beehive.

To my surprise, the equipment of this hiding place was much better than expected. In no time, there were wine bottles, chocolate, cucumber slices, and even a few flacons of nail polish on the table Aspasia had drawn me to. Chips bags, champagne bottles, and wine gums were now spread throughout the hall and opened.

The mood quickly became boisterous. A few women started singing, others danced to it, and at our table, we told each other the funniest dating faux pas and laughed until our bellies hurt.

We emptied bottle after bottle, talked, painted our toenails, only to remove the paint again afterward, and made face masks. During the night, Maggy and Emma joined us, and Maggy told us about meeting the love of her life. At first, she had seen only a challenge and a partner in battle in him. A long, adventurous journey had revealed her true feelings. In the meantime, they had been together for half an eternity.

It was probably the alcohol, but her story sounded like she already had a lifetime behind her, even though she could only be in her mid-twenties.

Would I ever go on adventurous journeys, discover new worlds, and finally find my true love? The probability of this was, in the current situation, at zero.

But dreaming about it was also lovely. So I thanked my friends at dawn, staggered back home through the tunnel, and fell into my bed a little later, exhausted. It had done me goodto experience this informality and normality. Aspasia was right when she said it temporarily helped against lovesickness.

I already knew what I would dream about tonight. Of distant lands, adventures, and wings, like those of Lilith, that would carry me away so that I could finally be the Myrina I really was. Free and strong.

CHAPTER 42

Myrina! Myrina!” I heard Aza whisper close to my ear already a short time later. “You have to wake up! Real quick!”

"What … What's wrong, Aza?" I stammered sleepily. My head ached, and my tongue felt swollen and dry at the same time. Only with difficulty did I manage to lift my eyelids. The first rays of sunlight, which stole through the curtains, burned my irises.

“Whew, what did you do tonight?” asked Aza in surprise. “Ransacked your father’s bar?”

"I couldn't sleep and thought a little alcohol might help," I lied. "As you can see, it wasn't a good idea."

"No, definitely not. And especially not when unexpected visitors are coming over for breakfast," she scolded, unable to hide the fear in her eyes from me.

Suddenly, I was awake.

“Who’s coming?” I asked uncertainly.

Aza tried to avoid my gaze as she gathered my clothes.

"Your father asked me not to inform you," she mumbled. But I saw from her face that the visit did not bode well.

"Tell me, Aza! Please!" I begged, throwing back the covers and swinging my legs out of bed. As I took a few steps towardher, the world spun before my eyes, and my head felt like it would explode.

"Oh no, Myrina! Why today of all days, when John Adam Nash …" She startled and slapped her hands over her mouth, but the words were already out. I felt so nauseous all at once that I jumped up, ran to the bathroom, and vomited into the toilet.

John Adam Nash, it echoed over and over in my head. My stomach rebelled, and my heart pounded thunderously against my rib cage. In my mind, I saw the man from the gala with his mottled gray hair and piercing eyes before me. What did he want here?

As soon as I felt a little better, I quickly slipped into a cold shower, put on the clothes Aza had laid out for me, and had her braid my hair.

“Are my brothers coming too?” I asked into the silence.
