“Our informant has revealed that, under a false pretense, Brandon is departing tomorrow and smuggling ill-gotten funds across the border.”

I cover my mouth with my hands and reach for my phone. “Ethan, we can't let him do that.”

“And we won't allow it,” Ethan states.

Just then, the office door opens. Andres, Jackson, Landon, and Damien enter the room. Ethan stands up and greets his friends.

“What's going on?” I ask Ethan.

“Andres and Jackson are going to take care of Dexter. They are going to make sure he won't be a bother to us again,” Ethan assures as he pats Jackson's hand.

I nod and stand up. Ethan holds out his hand to me. Grasping it, I'm filled with the comforting certainty of his support.

“You guys can go. We'll take care of everything,” Jackson promises.

“Leave? But where are we going?” I ask Ethan.

He gives me a patient smile that’s full of affection.

“To get your son.”

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

ETHAN

“Ethan, are you sure about this?”

Kristine lifts her gaze in search of mine. Her eyes are clear and full of healthy fear. I'd be afraid if she weren’t a little scared.

These men don't fight fairly, and if he's willing to barter with his son, he's foolish enough to try to hurt her. The second he tries, I'll put a bullet in his head.

“Don't worry,” I say, cupping her face in my hands. “Trust me.”

She nods, “Did you at least let a doctor check these wounds?”

I chuckle. “Nah, I'll let my future wife doctor me up after we lock up her ex.”

Kristine chuckles. “That, sir, was not a proposal. However, I'll take care of you for life. Just support me while I get my baby back.”

“Anything, sweetheart.”

We discussed the evidence I have on Brandon, but Kristine wants to handle Brandon straight up. I'll still have enough dirt to bury him and his career. However, I don't have a bone in this fight. Not really.

I take her hand and kiss it on the knuckles. Then, I bring her lips to mine.

I pull back, and she looks at me, anxious, and I understand. I understand that Brandon has hurt her so much that she has no other way to feel when she is around him.

But I don't plan to let this happen anymore. He is going to walk out of Kristine's life today, and he will never hurt her again.

Never again. I won't allow it.

Kristine seems to gather strength as she understands I'm by her side and won't abandon her or Asher.

“Do you plan to tell me what's in the briefcase?” I tease, pointing at the aged leather briefcase we retrieved from her place.

“I'll tell you when the time is right. It's just a little reassurance that I’ll handle Brandon for good this time.”

I nod and squeeze her hand. Taking a slow breath, she makes her way down the hallway beside me, until we approach the two bodyguards standing at the entrance.
