The punch to my gut hurt so bad I could barely breathe.

Here I’d gotten up early to try and figure out a way to connect with her, desperateto connect with her after I’d messed up so badly, and it was better than my ultimate fantasy of being with her. And all a mistake.

I was a mistake.

I knew I’d made a mistake hurting her, but I’d never felt a mistake with anyone besides our mom. It killed me.

But that wasbeforewe triggered her somehow. It was clear after what Jared teased she wasn’t there with us anymore.

She wasn’t seeing us, panicked and reliving something we couldn’t understand. Her magic sent us flying when we tried to comfort her.

I hit the wall hard and groaned as I tried to remember how to move my body. I pushed to my feet and slid back down, the shot making me feel like a truck had nailed me and then the wall.

Finally, I scrambled to my feet and chased after her, but I couldn’t get close to her, some protective barrier encasing her as she was locked in her own hell.

She scrambled along the hallway, tilting like she was dizzy and bouncing off the wall before trying to regain her balance.

“Larissa, it’s okay. It’s okay, sparkles. We’re here with you,” I called after her, cursing when she didn’t even react to what I said.

She darted in her room and it felt like I died when she let out a wail seconds later.

“That hurt,” Jesse groaned as he stumbled after me. He rushed towards the room but bounced off the barrier before he could reach her door. I caught him and we both crashed into the wall. “Fuck, she’s really powerful.”

“A little help,” Jared grunted from the kitchen.

We shared a look and darted back towards our youngest brother, cursing up a storm when we saw one of the cabinets with glass doors had fallen onto him. He’d covered his head but there was glass and cuts all over him.

“I’m seeing stars a bit,” he admitted. “I deserve it. How is she?”

“We can’t get to her,” Jesse grumbled. “What were you thinking, asshole?”

“That I wanted her not to break down crying like she looked about to,” he muttered. “I don’t think it was what I said. It was when she realized where I was.”

“Shit, that spirit said never to surround her. They used to surround her and terrorize her,” I seethed, having forgotten that to get to my own shit. I hurried to get the glass and shattered plates off of him, glad when nothing was sticking in him too deeply.

We’d taken basic medic training in case there was ever an accident on the job site, so at least we knew how to handle something like this. Jesse was checking his head and looking over him for wounds as I kept working.

“You’re good. Probably a concussion, but if you’re not dizzy for much longer then you should be in the clear.”

“It’s already fading,” Jared muttered. “I managed to protect my head when I landed, but then the cabinet caught me on the way down.” He let out a sigh. “If the screaming in my head would stop that would be great.”

“That’s not in your head,” I rasped, my heart aching. “That’s Larissa. I think she’s trapped in that flashback. Aren’t they supposed to only be for a few moments to like a minute? What I read said only a few minutes at most.”

“Never longer than that?” Jesse checked.

I swallowed loudly. “It said in rare cases when the trauma was extreme it could last hours or days.”

“Shit, I would call what she went through extreme,” he groaned. “Do we call Amelia?”

“She seems defensive when we mention her like I did about her eating,” I answered after a moment. “I don’t want to embarrass her if we don’t have to. I mean, they are friends and like mentor/mentee I think.” I glanced between them. “Let’s wait a bit. Maybe she’ll come out of it.”

Jessed nodded, sighing. “Not too long.”

“No, not too long,” I agreed.

But not too long still felt like forever when it involved the woman you were falling for screaming in terror. Tears leaked out of my eyes as we cleaned up the mess.

All I had wanted was to get closer to her. Jesse had cooking and making meals for her that they shared. Jared got her out and taking walks, playing around together and laughing.
