And I had work. We talked about work and the house. I handled all of that and only that. I’d done it, pushing too hard and fast like I always did when I saw a problem, but I was desperate to get some way to make up the ground I’d lost, push closer to her.

I needed to be closer to her. Every time I saw her smile or duck out of her hiding I needed to be closer to her.

But I’d fucked it all up and I wasn’t sure she’d ever forgive me. When the screaming finally stopped, I was on my feet and racing to her room, praying to Gaia she’d snapped out of it.

Except the barrier was still there and I bounced off of it. Shit.

“She lost her voice screaming?” Jesse whispered in horror. “Fuck it, we have to call Amelia.” He pulled out his phone and we nodded even if he wasn’t looking to check with us.

To say she wasn’t thrilled was an understatement. And even worse she didn’t know the answer to help.

What she could tell us was that the barrier would eventually weaken. It was her magic protecting her physically and just like blocking punches, eventually the person’s arms couldn’t take anymore. Same with her magic.

The second I heard that, I launched at the barrier, bouncing off of it and doing it again, desperate to wear it down so I could get to her. I went for about five minutes before I had to take a break, Jesse going next.

Jared tried to, but we were pretty sure he had a mild concussion so yeah, no magical barrier ramming from him.

“Go check the windows from outside,” I told him. “Maybe you can snap her out of it if she sees you.”

“Will that work?” he asked, not hiding his doubt.

“I think we’re at the desperate and worth a shot stage,” Jesse admitted.

I nodded and launched at the barrier again, noting it was about six inches back from last time. “It’s folding in a bit.”

“Well, that’s something,” Jared grumbled and headed for the door.

When I had to take a break, Jesse took over, both of us exhausted by lunchtime. Jared hadn’t been able to see anything through the curtains, and we’d been keeping an eye on him as well.

His head hurt but not to worrying levels and if he dozed, we made sure to wake him after a couple of hours. He grabbed us food and all we did was keep going.

The process was painfully slow, but every now and again we’d gain another six inches. Right around dinner, we were able to reach and open the door.

It didn’t help our worry since she was under the covers. Still, we didn’t give up. We couldn’t give up.

Jesse passed out sometime after midnight, and I didn’t have the energy to ram myself into it anymore. We’d long since passed that stage.

Now I leaned against it, thumping my fist on it over and over again until my hand went numb and then I’d switch. I pushed to my feet when it was time to check on Jared again, making sure he woke and there weren’t any problems.

This time I simply leaned on the barrier while standing and punching it, hoping my weight helped. I was seconds from screaming in frustration and not caring if I woke the others up when the barrier dissipated.

I caught myself on the bed at the last second and scrambled up to her, yanking back the covers.

She blinked up at me, completelywreckedand like she couldn’t pull out of the exhaustion to know she was awake. “Jackson?”

“Yeah, it’s me, sparkles. We’ve been here this whole time,” I whispered as I pulled her to me, my gut clenching how horrible her throat sounded. “Oh, thank fuck you snapped out of it. We were so scared.”

“Sorry, I’m so sorry,” she rasped, her voice weak.

“It’s fine, everything’s fine,” I murmured.

“Throat.”

“I bet.” I helped close her robe and lifted her out of the bed, bringing her back to the kitchen and ignoring the feelings that stirred in me.

And not just me from the way she flushed when I set her on the counter. I ignored it and grabbed her a Gatorade, opening it before handing it to her. She took a few greedy sips before slowing down.

“Please don’t hate me,” I choked out as I leaned my forehead down to hers. “I’m so sorry.”
