“Played it like I was abducted and she was the grieving mother,” I grumbled, bobbing my head and having guessed they might know that, so that was why I was honest earlier too. “Yeah, they also had stories I was abducted by aliens. There was clear evidence I ran and I’m sorry ifshewasted any taxpayer dollars for that bullshit, but maybe someone should have cared when I told teachers she was starving me!”

“I’m sorry,” he said gently after several moments. “I didn’t mean to sound like I was judging. I wasn’t. I wasn’t there, and clearly you were scared when you thought she had found you. You can’t fake that kind of fear. We’ll make sure to block you from what we can, and it’s not like we want the kind of attention here.”

The other one snorted. “Yeah, visit Kansas City where Dortha Carter had a heart attack.”

Fair enough. I thanked them and went to walk them out. “Do you like apples?”

“Um, yeah,” the first said, giving me a curious look.

I rubbed my hand over my head, fidgeting under their gazes. “We were talking earlier about what to do with all the groves on the property when it’s harvest season. I’m new here.”

He raised an eyebrow. “I had no idea this place had trees like that. It’s been a lost farm for years and I don’t even remember what it was used for.”

“Yeah, I found it a shock too,” I admitted, not having to lie about that either. “It’s like a thousand acres after all. I’ve not even had time to inspect it all. A swimming hole would be cool.”

“Or have something weird,” Jackson grumbled. “We’ll put in a pool for you.”

“What made you get a farm like this without even checking it out?” the first policeman asked, not in the pushy way but just curious as to who moved into the area.

I shrugged. “I did a big job for a client who’s all into buying foreclosed places and bringing life to an area. She knew about my situation and thought it time I stop running and just have a life of my own. I’m not really good with people, and having my own place to really spread my wings a bit sounded nice.”

“You said you always wanted greenhouses and to enjoy nature more after growing up in New York,” Jackson added. “I bet she took one look at this place and knew the vibe was all you.”

I smiled, ducking my head. “Maybe. I wasn’t sure I’d really like it, but I do. It’s so peaceful here. We put in AC, and now that I have the faster internet I need, and I think she was right.”

“Well, welcome to the area,” the policeman said, extending his hand to me. “I want to say sorry for your loss, but clearly it’s not that simple, so I’ll say sorry for scaring you, and welcome to the Kansas City area.”

“Thanks.” I beamed at him as we shook, shaking the other guy’s hand as well.

And noting Jackson moved his arm around me possessively. Okay then.

The second the door was closed and locked behind them, he moved me up against the wall and kissed me. “Good, now we can get to the bonding.”

“Huh? What?” I couldn’t even hide my shock.

He chuckled against my lips. “Did you think we changed our minds or something?”

“Well, no one’s brought it up, so, um, maybe.”

He leaned back and frowned. “No way, sparkles. Thora said you’d be notified, so we expected a visit from the police. We didn’t want to be doing anything we couldn’t explain, so we decided to wait until after. And I’m going first as oldest and the one who will be your lover to the public since I’m scariest.”

Huh?

Jackson

Her confused, glazed-over look was absolutely delicious. I kissed her again and my hands found their way to her ass. She’d gained several pounds and a bit of that found its way to her ass and I loved it.

I loved all of her.

I just loved her.

“Be my witch forever, Larissa. Let’s bond tonight. We all want to.”

“Okay, tonight,” she panted, licking her lips as she studied me. “You better be ready for it.”

“I am,” I promised. “Go call Meave and get whatever started. We’ll finish the day and dinner before we bond.”
