“It is. How far are you willing to help her?”

“All the way. Whatever I can do. I need her safe. She mentioned totems for fractured spirits once all three of us were bonded and she would be grounded?”

“That is a lot of power.”

“She wants to share it, help others like she always does, but in the background. She said we could do that but right now, she needs the protection.”

“She does. I could use her help taking down some hunters we’re getting the run around on, and what you’re asking for will take a lot of magic. I’ll get started and a shipment to you in the next few days. I’ll email her specifics, but I’ll need a few full totems sent back to me to help power all of this fast.”

I thought about earlier. “Is there a way to offer up the magic of healing? Each time we have sex, she said the magic is healing one of her scars.”

“Holy shit, Gaia wants you with her,” she whispered. “I’ve never heard of that, and her magical scars were a lot of power.” She muttered something I couldn’t hear. “It could be Gaia is letting her open the scars and that magic out to heal itself. That would be a lot of power, yes, as her body took the dark magic of curses and scars and now is releasing it in light and love. I will send totems that might help.”

“Thank you. I really appreciate it.”

“I appreciate you taking care of my friend. We’ll talk again, Jackson.”

I said goodbye and felt at least the first piece of a long path in place. I flinched when I walked in and Larissa was cursing up a storm. I glanced at Jesse who was setting everything down for breakfast.

“They gave the publicist her number to make arrangements as a trap to have reason to fire the bitch when she leaked it,” he explained. “No one knows the address, but the media is all over Dortha’s death, the mysterious press release since no one wants to tell the full story and the crazy that originally surrounded Larissa running away.”

I nodded and headed over to her, making a time-out gesture. I waited until she told them to hold on. “People who can track her plane will come here eventually. Have the attorneys issue a statement that she was taking a small trip to research a possible new role she was interested inandthe publicist no longer speaks for the family as she was caught trying to cash in on the tragedy.”

“That’s good,” she praised, giving me a quick kiss before repeating it for whoever was on the phone.

“Every invoice, everyeverythingfrom this moment is done in my name on this house,” I told the other two. “There’s going to be too much mention of a Larissa Carter for a while. If we have to transfer funds into our account or whatever, but her name is not mentioned at all.”

“Smart, very smart,” Jared muttered, his eyes glued to his phone. “It’s all over. This is not going to go away soon as the vultures can just smell a huge story that now someone knows where Larissa is. Shit. I never condone violence against women, but I’m thinking about it for this publicist.”

“If it wasn’t her it was going to be someone else,” I sighed. “This way at least it was controlled a bit.” But I agreed, giving Larissa a worried look as I felt her upset. I rubbed my stomach. “Wow, she might give me an ulcer just from the echoes. Someone order her more stomach stuff.”

“Already done,” Jesse muttered, looking just as worried as I was.

So much for a moment to enjoy the good before more crazy.

“I can say this now as I’m no longer employed and held to my contract. Larissa Carter was always the most spoiled, greedy, and ungrateful brat. Dortha did everything for her and it was never enough. Anyone who doesn’t attend their own mother’s funeral doesn’t deserve to inherit their estate. And these rumors and lies flying around about my friend are disgusting.”

“Don’t you think that’s a bit one-sided given Ms. Carter’s attorneys fired you for leaking private information and trying to cash in on their story?” the report asked, and from there it spun into a shouting match and the same shit.

I shook my head. It had been a few weeks since the announcement of my parents’ deaths and still it was getting national news. People were too much and just pushing and pushing. Even harassing my attorneys at every turn and again when I flipped channels.

“The public has a right to know what happened to Larissa Carter and get answers,” one reporter declared.

The head attorney handling it all stopped and gave the guy a withering look. “Larissa Carter is a private citizen and entitled to her privacy just like anyone else. Her mother was a public figure and still was entitled to her privacy. Their story is theirs and certainly not for you to tell because you want more airtime or views. The answer stands, we will not release her information.”

The video switched back to inside people.

“This new wave of outcry demanding answers has been increasingly incessant,” the commentator said. “And for those of you who have been living under a rock and don’t know, most of this started after the daughter released this statement. ‘My mother and I had a falling out sixteen years ago and never reconciled. I feel it is wrong to play the role of grieving daughter when we were estranged.

“‘The focus is my parents and those who wish to pay their respects and celebrate their lives. I wouldn’t do the disservice to the people in attendance to take away from that. I thank those who grieve my parents and have sent their wishes and prayers. I also thank those who sent their genuine condolences as we may not have agreed on much, but they were my parents and I feel their loss.’”

One of the other commentators snorted. “Well, she also made a very big statement asking people to donate money to a mental health non-profit instead of sending flowers. She also donated a chunk of her inheritance to another charity that helps protect victims of child abuse. So she’s said a lot without coming forward and saying much or showing her damn face.”

“Why should she have to?” a third argued. “She didn’t ask to be in the spotlight. I think she’s handling this with class when there was clearly bad blood. I’m disgusted with all the posts on social media making Dortha Carter like some fallen saint when the evidence surfaced it was clear Larissa Carter ran away from home and Dortha spent over a decade playing the victim like she might have been abducted.
