“I wouldn’t show my face and jump into the vipers either. She had to release that because people were demanding she give a DNA test and answer for the tax dollars spent searching for her and investigating her possible kidnapping. I think we know exactly what happened and Larissa Carter was thevictimof her mother and got free. She’s not the one who needs to answer anything.”

“I agree,” said the first. “There have been many statements given that they witnessed Dortha treat the girl like crap when she was on set. One said Larissa complained she was hungry and Dortha said she couldn’t eat because she would get fat. Those are the people I want answers from. Why did no one report there could be child abuse?”

The fourth one jumped in. “There was something going on because when the timeline of pictures was laid out, the girl went from bone-thin to chunky back and forth, back and forth. I would have run away too just from whatever was going on there.”

I jerked when the TV turned off, seeing Jesse holding the remote.

“Enough, kitten,” he whispered, coming over and hugging me. “Enough. Just let it play out however and blow over.”

“I know,” I sighed, snuggling up to my familiar, thrilled we bonded a few days ago. “The attorneys promised to let me know if I need to give any more statements, but I just can’t get over how this is still going on.”

“You knew you would throw fuel on the fire when you donated that money,” he reminded me as he kissed my neck. “We’re proud of you for doing it, but it got you another few weeks of being in the news cycles.”

“I know,” I sighed. “I’m not going to run my mouth about someone dead who can’t defend themselves even if it’s the truth. But everyone acting like she was this beacon of everything good and beautiful just made me want to vomit.

“She was a monster, not fucking Mother Teresa. Even among other movie stars and models, she was known for never donating her money or getting involved.”

“It would chap her ass you have.”

“I know.” It was evil but yes, it made my day to donate so much of her shit and money to charity when she was a selfish bitch.

Amelia and several others were handling the packing up of my parents’ everything even against the arguments of several powerful BDE witches since she was one of theirs. But I thought Thora going back to their council and smacking them around since they were supposed to protect the list and my mother immediately came after me worked well.

She also made it very, veryclear that if my address or anything was slipped to the media by one of their people, she would destroy that whole estate and all who were around there. That was one hell of a threat and they backed off.

A lot of it was being auctioned off for charity, sosomeof the criticisms I got about her estate quieted down then.

Hey, I didn’t ask to be related to the damn woman. It wasn’t my fault the law worked that way or whatever will or paperwork the attorneys were all handling.

Jared said it wasn’t an inheritance but reparations for all the abuse I suffered, and I liked the money a lot better after that.

“Shouldn’t you be working and making that money, kitten?” Jesse teased me, laughing when I snorted.

I’d been working so much to help Briony and her team of reformed hunters to track down other radical hunters and crazies that the triplets kept dragging me away from my system and threatening to turn off the power so I’d rest.

Thora had put in a bunch of orders of new IDs to be created for “children” of a list of witches that they would assume the identities of in a few decades and I had work coming out of my ears.Especiallynow that we were playing nice with the other side and peace between us for the moment.

More like both sides rallying the power and support and everything they could to make it clear that no one should butt into their business.

Either way, I wanted to stay out of it as much as possible, but it was good formybusiness. And even more so when their head of the council was planning on giving me another list to handle.

I had a problem with that though, and not even because of the blood magic, but I knew how trapped the kids of BDE witches could be and no one ever got involved. If they wanted my help, I told Thora flat out that I wanted to know another kid—male or female—didn’t have to endure what I did and that council agreed with me.

Shocking, but even darkness had its lines it seemed.

Shocking.

“I think you don’t get dessert tonight if you’re going to be so disrespectful to your witch,” I purred as I pulled away.

He answered by cornering me against the wall, kneeling before me, and moving his head under my dress to have some fun. He brought me twice and then carried me back over to my systems, sitting me down at my chair and kissing my hair.

“I love you, kitten.”

“Love you too, brat,” I chuckled.

“Yes, but I’m your brat now and forever,” he murmured, nuzzling my neck a bit before standing with a sigh. “I want more dessert, but dinner won’t make itself. My witch likes sweet and sour pork, and sweet and sour pork she will have.”

“You just want the blow job I promised you each time you make it.”
