I nodded, relieved he understood. “I won’t lie that I don’t have body image issues, I do, there’s a good reason for—”

“You don’t have to defend it to me, kitten,” he said gently, tapping the sleeve covering my hand. “Jackson really does mean well, and he was way gentler with you than he is with us. He just wants to help.”

“I don’t know you guys.”

“True, which is why I’d just tell you what I did. Jared would just try setting food in front of you and hiding your protein shakes. That’s a youngest for you, taking the bratty way.”

“Yeah, yeah, you’re perfect, asshole,” Jared called out from deeper in the house which was funny.

“Can I come back in now?” Jackson asked from outside. “I am sorry I was a dick. I was just trying to help.”

“I say we give him at least another ten minutes in his time-out,” Jesse whispered.

It was really hard not to laugh and I lost the fight.

And I did eventually let him back in.

Life was different having people around. Really different.

Over the next few days, we fell into a bit of a routine and I wasn’t constantly freaking out they were around. And I liked them. Jesse especially, but Jared made me laugh, and even if I was hesitant with Jackson, I could trust him with the house stuff.

They didn’t have a lot of cash to order stuff and get paid after the job was over, so I paid using their contractor’s discounts. But it was nice to just know it was all handled.

I did feel a bit like a kitten with Jesse, and not because he was gorgeous and always smelled good so I wanted to snuggle up to him.

But he was gentle with me, making me scrambled eggs with half an apple and not pushing for more. He made salmon or other fish and a small portion of rice for dinner for all of us.

And that was it. No pushing. No lectures or bulldozing or tossing all my protein shakes. He even got more when he offered to go grocery shopping.

Jared was like he’d warned me though, and random snacks would show up on my desk or a refill on my water with drops of the array of water enhancers I liked to use. He paid attention too as the water was never too cold and it was always the perfect blend.

I thanked him each time, and he said it was only fair since I allowed him to use them.

I didn’t think it was really like that, but it was… Nice. For the first time, I didn’t hate being around people if it was the triplets.

Jesse

I used to think people who talked about love at first sight were full of shit. It sounded like code for letting lust take over their brain or their dick did all their thinking.

But when I saw the photo at Amelia’s of the striking woman standing next to her, I knew there was something there.

And then I met Larissa in person and she was so, so much better. Sure, she was really underweight and she hid herself to the point it hurt my heart.

But those moments where she peeked out of hiding and looked at me, I felt a punch in the gut of her beauty and an arrow to my heart that Cupid didn’t need to keep shooting as I was completely hers.

From the moment she let me make her breakfast and nibbled on my scrambled eggs, coming out of hiding enough to try something better for herself—I was sunk bad.

I glanced at her house and wondered what she was doing right then. We were sitting outside of our trailer and enjoying the night. We might not be witches, but we had magic in our blood, and we could still feel the power of the full moon.

It was going to be a rough summer this year if it was the first week of April and the high temp was hitting eighty, but it meant a nice night to relax outside and enjoy the quiet.

Her land had a weird feel, and it made sense if it just became hers. Normally, when we went on a witch’s land, it felt of them, but this place felt lost.

Maybe a bit like my kitten.

I turned when I heard a noise and about dropped my beer when I saw Larissa step outside for the first time since we’d been there… And with her hair down, not even hidden.
