Fine, that so wasn’t the same as waiting for her to tell me it was okay, but I did ask first, so I gave fair warning.

She didn’t move though, so I lowered my head to her, just the simplest brush of our lips and it waseverything.

“That was my first kiss,” she breathed, her fingers running just under her lips.

“Mine too,” I admitted, nodding it was true. “I’m a bit scarred with women after our mom. Aggressive ones scare the crap out of me.”

“Me too,” she chuckled darkly. “But there’s a lot that terrifies me so add it to the damn list.”

“Me?”

“No, you don’t terrify me,” she panted, giving me a longing look that I couldn’t ignore. I cupped her face and kissed her again, longer this time, firmly pressing my lips to hers. “What you make me feel terrifies me.”

“Me too,” I promised. I let my fingers trail down and over her shoulder, touching one of the scars. “You’re not the only one who has scars, kitten. I think you’re still the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen even now that I’ve seen them.”

She shut down right in front of me, pulling away. “You’ve met Amelia. That’s not funny.”

“I won’t deny she’s gorgeous, but I stand by what I said. You’re my type, and I prefer you because I see the beauty inside of you too, and it makes you so much more gorgeous to me.”

She leaned in a bit and I got the hint, giving her one more kiss before she pulled away and about scampered off to her bedroom. I smiled after her.

Run all you want, kitten, because I will absolutely chase you and play all you let me.

And I would enjoy every second of it.

She was shocked when I was still there when she came back in her normal light cotton clothes that completely covered her and tucked away her hair.

“I really wanted to make sure we were okay from last night.” I smiled when she nodded. “And, um, I know what the spirit said, but, um, you’re nice about my cooking and they’re not, so I was sort of hoping that…”

“What? You can talk to me,” she murmured as she moved closer. “Do you not want to cook anymore?”

“No, I like cooking. I was going to ask if it was okay if I tried some new recipes. I really want to try making a spaghetti squash dish instead of using pasta. Maybe with ground turkey in the sauce.”

“I’ll try that if you want,” she agreed after a moment. “That sounds not heavy.”

More like not high in calories and carbs that she was scared of to get “fat” again which made more sense given her past torture.

I leaned in and gave her a quick kiss. “Thanks, kitten. The idiots don’t let me play and I want to, you know?”

“I’ll beat them up,” she promised, ducking her head when I chuckled but not before I saw her smile.

She got to work and so did I, glad I’d already gotten what I needed from the grocery store since I’d been wanting to do it.

Jackson and Jared shot me nasty looks at dinner when they noticed how Larissa kept blushing when our eyes met. I didn’t care. They could stuff it.

There was no way I was regretting that kiss.

“That was great, Jesse,” Jared praised when we were done. “I admit, I doubted squash could be as good as pasta, but you made it tasty.” He stood and stretched, glancing at Larissa. “Want to take a stroll with me? It’s good for digestion after meals and the fresh air is nice. I mean, tonight’s perfect.”

She shot me a quick glance and I just smiled, nodding it was fine and she looked relieved. “Sure, a short walk. I’m not that active, but I should at least check out my own property. I do have more work to do.”

“Yeah, just a few minutes,” Jared promised. She nodded and said she’d get her shoes, thanking Jackson when he said he’d handle the dishes.

She came back and stopped in front of me, fidgeting with her sleeves. “Thank you for dinner, Jesse. It was really good. Really, it was.”

“Thanks, I had fun.” I cleared my throat and leaned in a bit, letting my fingers trail over her covered hand. “I thought I’d try one more new recipe before more salmon. What would you think about Asian-style chicken thighs and fresh zucchini?”

“I’d try it if it wasn’t too much trouble,” she replied after a moment. “It sounds, um, good, maybe.”
