“You havegotto be kidding me!” Danica yells out in objection to Karoline’s words, having been eavesdropping.

Kassidy shrinks in on herself. Again, my protective instincts kick in. The urge to keep bad things away from her coming from someplace foreign. Ignoring Danica’s outburst, my focus stays on Karoline.

“Being that you have been around us for all of ten minutes, exactly how are you an expert?” The venom in my voice has Kassidy shrinking in on herself, more than she already has been. Grabbing her hand, I give it a gentle squeeze.

“Look at these two?” Karoline comments, indicating Kennedy and Callum. “They are all but fucking here in the room.”

Her words have Kennedy and Callum jumping apart.

Gareth growls. “What my wife does and who she does it with is none of your concern.”

That has Karoline’s attention. As she goes rounds with Gareth regarding their sex life, my focus turns to Kassidy.

“Is she why you weren’t answering your phone last night?” I whisper.

“Yeah,” Kassidy croaks out.

“Don’t blame you there,” I say, making eye contact with Kassidy. I make sure she understands my sincerity. “You have my number. Use it if you need it.”

She nods once, acknowledging my statement. Turning her focus back on her breakfast, Kassidy manages to get a few bites in before Danica’s patience runs out.

“Someone please explain this bullshit!” Her voice is loud and shrill, easily carrying through the room. All noise has pretty much stopped as the entire room shuffles to watch the show before them. Danica takes a deep breath, gearing up for a full rant. “How is it that this mouse is dating Brock? Who the fuck is this bitch?” Her last question has her motioning in Karoline’s direction.

Being used to dealing with Danica and her temper tantrums, we all continue eating, ignoring her.

“Who are you?” Karoline asks, her eyes wide as she takes in the women behind me.

“I asked you first,” Danica snarks back, causing my eyes to roll.

“Kassidy’s sister, Karoline,” Karoline’s tone is as if she is speaking to someone obtuse like it isn’t possible that she is unknown to the entire world.

“The mouse has a sister like you,” Danica spits out.

“Danica, please just run along. Some of us are trying to eat before class,” Gareth sighs.

“Gareth, it was bad enough that this…” Danica’s description of Kennedy trails off at the scathing looks each of the four guys give her. “Brainwashedthe four of you,” she spits out, tossing a hand in Kennedy’s direction. “Now, this one,” Danica turns, indicating Kassidy, “gets Brock! What the fuck?”

Deciding that breakfast is over, we all start clearing away the empty plates and such, getting ready to go to class.

“Danica, like we tried to tell you before…” Rodney starts. “Maybe if you were a little more selective about who you let between your legs, you might get the man you want.”

Rodney lets his words hang in the air as he turns from the table, heading to the door. The rest of us fall in line, tossing our garbage and putting the trays in the window to be cleaned. Karoline stays at the table, still working through all of the food she picked.

The Pussy Patrol stays behind, their aggressive posture and dirty looks aimed at Karoline. If class wasn’t so important, I would hang around and watch the catfight that is brewing.

As soon as we are out of sight of the dining hall, Gareth steps to the side as the rest gather around him.

“Brock, can you give me your phone number?” he asks, all businesslike.

“Yeah, that’s no problem,” I respond, handing him my phone. “Can I ask why?” Getting on their good side is a goal of mine since it is obvious Kassidy and I will be in each other’s lives for the foreseeable future.

“I am going to add you to each of our contacts and to our group chat,” Gareth pauses. “Something tells me that it is going to be needed, especially with Karoline in town.”

Gareth takes my phone, and each of the guys, in turn, hand me theirs. As the phones circulate hands, pings sound with text messages from each of us. Once we each have our respective phones back in hand, we say our goodbyes, heading toward our first class. Before Kassidy has a chance to escape, I pull her aside, speaking just loud enough that she can hear me.

“If you need anything, anything, don’t hesitate to call or text me. I am not sure if you will see me at lunch, as I have to get back to the gym before Coach kills me. I will see you in the librarylater, though.” Brushing a kiss to the side of Kassidy’s head, I walk away.
